The Guardian: HP shutdown of webOS division said to be 'imminent'

Could the writing have already been on the wall for webOS when former VP of worldwide developer relations Richard Kerris left HP for Nokia this week? While nothing is yet confirmed, The Guardian is now reporting that HP will indeed finally shut down its webOS division, which could affect up to 500 jobs (either through reassignment or layoffs -- we've previously heard that some layoffs had already begun). That word comes from some unnamed internal HP sources, who reportedly expect an "imminent closure," with one employee adding that "there's a 95% chance we all get laid off between now and November." For its part, HP remained noticeably mum on any news about webOS when it announced that it would hang onto its PC business this week, and its decision to use Windows 8 on tablets certainly didn't do much to inspire the webOS faithful.

FDA ties birth control drugs to blood clot risk

(AP) ? Federal health regulators say several new birth control drugs, including the Bayer pill Yaz, appear to increase the risk of dangerous blood clots more than older medications.

A new study released by the Food and Drug Administration reviewed the medical history of more than 800,000 women taking different forms of birth control between 2001 and 2007. On average, woman taking Yaz had significantly higher rates of blood clots than women taking older birth control drugs.

The agency also reports higher complications in women using the Ortho Evra patch from Johnson & Johnson and the Nuvaring vaginal ring from Merck & Co. Inc.

Recent studies have reached differing conclusions on the risks of newer birth control pills. The FDA is holding a public meeting in December to discuss the data.

Missing baby's brothers to be interviewed again

FILE - This file photo provided Oct. 4, 2011, by the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, shows Lisa Irwin. Police and federal authorities have been searching extensively for Irwin who was 10 months old when her parents reported her missing on Oct. 4, 2011. (AP Photo, Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, File)

(AP) ? Kansas City police plan to re-interview the two older brothers of a missing Kansas City baby Friday as part of the investigation into her disappearance three weeks ago.

A specialist trained in interviewing children will talk to Lisa Irwin's brothers, The Kansas City Star reported Wednesday. Police spokesman Capt. Steve Young said police also planned to collect DNA from the boys to compare to unknown DNA found during the investigation and possibly eliminate some as evidence. Such samples can be obtained using a cotton swab inside the mouth.

Police had said they hadn't been able to talk to the boys since Oct. 4, when parents Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin reported 10-month-old Lisa missing. The boys, ages 5 and 8, are Bradley and Irwin's sons from previous relationships.

Police have not discussed their investigation but have said they have no suspects in Lisa's disappearance. Investigators have cleared hundreds of tips and leads and have searched the family's home, several wooded areas near the home, a landfill and a nearby industrial park.

Cynthia Short, the family's attorney, said Wednesday that police recently asked to interview the boys a second time and the parents "have had to weigh the best interest of their small children against the desire of the law enforcement to bring their boys in for a second interview."

The couple chose to allow the second interviews after they were assured they "would be done in a safe place and would be done by a specially trained social worker," Short said. She said they "should be done by the end of the week."

Interviewing children a second time in an ongoing investigation would not be unusual, though in an "ideal circumstance one interview should be enough," said Victor Vieth, director of the National Child Protection Training Center at Winona State University in Minnesota, which trains forensic specialists to interview children.

"You have to be well-trained, you have to be cautious. You should be recording the interview so you can show conclusively that everything was done appropriately," Vieth said. "The ultimate check though on the veracity of the children's statement ... is can you take their statement and go out and corroborate it."

Linda Cordisco Steele, a child forensic interview specialist with the National Children's Advocacy Center in Huntsville, Ala., said while she was a "little bit surprised" that police had not talked to the boys since Oct. 4, there are no strict guidelines about how much time should elapse between such interviews.

"The thinking is the closer to the event and the closer together the interviews the more likely the information is not going to be lost or forgotten or contaminated," she said.

More interviews could be warranted if the investigation is active "and things come up," she said.

'Dexter' star opens up about working with ex

Jennifer Carpenter is on her way to a weekend bender! And it's the best of all kinds for TV fans.

"I'm working on 'The Good Wife' and we're working a 'Fraturday,'" she tells us of her guest stint opposite Michael J. Fox. "Which means you start work Friday and don't get off til the crack of dawn Saturday morning."

Good times! But before that, we caught up with J.Carp to ask about that other awesome show she's on, Showtime's "Dexter," to find out if Deb knows Dex's secret, and what it's like working with that other middle-initialed Michael, her ex-husband Michael C. Hall...

We met with Jennifer as she shot a fashion feature for the site Stylecaster, and she told us she still looks forward to going to work on "Dexter."

"I'm grateful that it is successful," she explains. "Because, you know, six years in and to still be challenged by the work and proud of the work is quite an accomplishment. It's largely in part to our writers. They are all powerhouses and sick in the greatest way!"

Despite filing for divorce late last year from "Dexter" star Michael C. Hall, Jennifer tells us the pair remain close while working together on the show.

"Has it changed anything? Yes," she says of their time on the set. "[But] I mean, he is and always will be one of my best friends in the world. And just because the marriage ended doesn't mean the love isn't still there. We take very good care of each other and our cast, we always have, and I'm just really lucky."

As for the seasons-long question "Dexter" fans are always wanting to know?whether Deb (Jennifer) will find out her brother Dexter is a serial killer?Jennifer tells us, "Just between us, I think that [Deb] has always suspected something dark, sort of like a dark undercurrent with him. There are just too many gaping holes with his schedule with how he connects and disconnects from her and other people. So I don't think that she would say that 'He must wrap people in plastic, and drive knives through their ribcage.' You know? ... I don't think it's quite cut and dry like that for her, but there is always a suspicion, and I feel like ... I've always been right there with you the audience."

Tonya Rice tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review newspaper that her 13-year-old son, Brandon, died Thursday morning at a hospital in Pennsylvania.

The boy smoked the fake marijuana out of a plastic candy dispenser and suffered chemical burns to both lungs. He was put on a respirator in June and had a double lung transplant in September.

The boy's mother says anti-rejection drugs he's taken since the transplants weakened his immune system and made him unable to fight off a recent infection.

Gov. Tom Corbett signed a law outlawing such substances a few days after the boy became ill. The ban took effect in August.

Report: Scott Disick Purchases Engagement Ring!

As one Kardashian marriage reportedly falls apart, might another be on the way?

Insiders tell Life & Style that Scott Disick took a friend to Classics Jewelry in New York City's Diamond District last month and purchased "a 1.5-carat princess-cut-diamond ring," presumably for bride-to-be Kourtney Kardashian.

Serious Scott Disick

We've all been here before, of course.

On the season finale of Kourtney & Kim Take New York, Scott planned to propose but refrained after Kourtney shot down the idea by asking: "If things are so good now... why would we want to change that?"

But the relationship is better than ever, a pal says, making this the ideal time to pop the question.

"Right now, they're so in love and so happy with each other and their family that there's no reason for them not to get married. Kourtney has also really come around to the idea of marriage."

And, hey, season two of Kourtney & Kim Take New York needs a finale!

Former W.Va. Krishna leader dies in India at 74 (AP)

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. ? Swami Bhaktipada, who built a massive farm community and a Palace of Gold that became the crown jewel of the U.S. Hare Krishna movement before scandals and criminal charges led to his downfall, died Monday in India, his biographer said. He was 74.

Bhaktipada had been hospitalized in July in Thane, India, with a collapsed lung and a bleeding brain, said spokesman, former disciple and biographer Henry Doktorski. His kidneys began to fail last week, and Bhaktipada died Monday morning.

Doktorski lived at the New Vrindaban community near Moundsville in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle for 16 years and said he plans to soon publish "Gold, Guns and God: Swami Bhaktipada and the West Virginia Hare Krishnas."

Under Bhaktipada's leadership, New Vrindaban grew into what at one time was the nation's largest Hare Krishna community. But the community's membership waned after the swami was convicted of racketeering and sentenced to prison time in the 1990s.

"Although he played a positive role in the Krishna movement's earliest years, he later severely violated the strict standards expected of a Krishna devotee, especially a leader," said community spokesman Anuttama Dasa.

Also known as Kirtanananda Swami, Bhaktipada had been born Keith Ham in Peekskill, N.Y., the son of a Southern Baptist minister who became a Krishna swami in 1966.

Without the permission of his leader in India at the time, Doktorski said, Bhaktipada set out to "westernize" the religion by eliminating some traditional elements and chanting prayers in English at a New York City temple. He was evicted from the temple and left New York in 1967, but was later forgiven.

In the late 1960s, Bhaktipada and his lifelong partner, the late Howard Morton Wheeler, formed New Vrindaban, the community with a famed Palace of Gold. They started with about 132 acres and eventually acquired nearly 5,000, becoming a destination for pilgrims in the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, or ISKCON.

Bhaktipada took over the community in the 1970s but was in trouble with ISKCON by 1987, when the governing body expelled him for "moral and theological deviations," Doktorski said.

Sankirtana Das, a New Vrindaban member for more than two decades, told The Associated Press in 1999 that the community had flourished in the late 1970s and had more than 600 members by 1985. That year, Bhaktipada was attacked by a visiting devotee and hospitalized in a coma for a month.

In 1987, the FBI raided the community, seizing records and computers, Das said. Bhaktipada and New Vrindaban were excommunicated from ISKCON, and members began to leave as Bhaktipada formed a new League of Devotees.

Prosecutors later accused Bhaktipada of ordering the killings of two devotees who had threatened his control of New Vrindaban. One dissident, Charles St. Denis, was killed in 1983 at New Vrindaban. Another, Stephen Bryant, was killed three years later as he sat in his van in Los Angeles.

Bhaktipada denied any involvement in the killings, though another man was convicted of the murders and testified that the swami ordered him to commit the slayings.

Prosecutors also alleged that Bhaktipada had amassed more than $10 million through illegal fundraising schemes, including the sale of caps and bumper stickers bearing copyrighted and trademarked logos.

He appealed his 1991 racketeering conviction, then pleaded guilty at a second trial in August 1996 and was sentenced to 20 years. A judge reduced the sentence to 12 years in 1997, citing Bhaktipada's poor health. He'd suffered with severe asthma and complications from childhood polio.

Bhaktipada was freed four years early from a prison in Butner, N.C., in 2004, but he was barred from returning to New Vrindaban and eventually moved to India in 2008.

Dasa said Bhaktipada eventually lost the support of his New Vrindaban followers and left the community entirely in 1994. Shortly afterward, the community petitioned to rejoin ISKCON, and it was restored to full membership in 1996.

The conditions for rejoining ISKCON included adhering to traditional worship and new accountability standards, and demonstrating a willingness to work with about 50 other North American temples, Dasa said.

Today, New Vrindaban has about 200 members living on or next to the property.

It remains a destination for pilgrims, drawing crowds for festivals, major holy days, and weekend or weeklong retreats. About 25,000 people visit annually, enjoying the ornate palace, a rose garden with more than 100 varieties, and an organic farm and dairy.

Handling life's crossroads

Some decisions are so big that they will affect he trajectory of your entire life. Here are some ways to handle those big decisions.

Every so often, we?re met with a situation in our lives that represents a seriously life alteration. If we go one way, our whole life is going to go down a different path than if we chose the other option.

Skip to next paragraph Trent Hamm

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Recent posts

These can take a lot of forms. The choice to marry someone. The choice to divorce someone. The choice to change career paths. The choice to sign a long-term contract. The choice to retire.

When we?re faced with one of these moments in our lives, it can be an incredible challenge. Often, both directions offer some positives and some negatives.

The usual advice in situations like this is to make a list of pros and cons. That?s often a powerful first step, but it?s just that ? a first step.

The real challenge comes in when you?re looking at those pros and cons and you?re trying to figure out which set comes out on top. Here are some of my thoughts on the issue.

Maintaining things the way they are now isn?t really much of a positive. If the way things are was satisfying you, you likely wouldn?t be at this crossroads thinking about this decision.

Keeping things the same is often very tempting because, as humans, we?re creatures of habit. However, if you?re keeping things on a path that led you to these crossroads, it?s not really much of a positive.

If you can maintain an extremely basic standard of living, choose the path with the most upside. Often, a crossroads is a choice between a ?safe? path with less risk and a ?risky? path with the greatest positive potential outcome. If the risky path offers at least a minimal standard of living as the worst case scenario, the risky path should be strongly considered.

Why? Almost always, when we choose the more challenging path, we never regret not choosing the easy path. However, when we choose the easy path, we often find ourselves regretting not taking that more challenging path.

Set yourself a firm deadline. More often than we?d like, a difficult decision at a crossroads is decided by indecision. We sit on it and hem and haw until the decision is essentially made for us ? and that usually takes us down the safe path.

Instead, set yourself a tight deadline for resolving this crossroads and hold yourself to it. One effective way to do this is to inform interested parties of your self-imposed deadline by telling them that you?ll have a decision by that date. This puts some additional pressure on you to actually move forward with a decision.

Talk to people with experience at this same crossroads. Internet forums can be perfect for this as it allows you to anonymize yourself, but there?s also incredible value in talking to trusted friends about such things, too.

Simply put, you?re looking for advice from people who have gone through something like what you?re going through. This advice can be incredibly useful, but you also need to filter it a little. Make sure that people are being genuine, and ignore advice from people who seem to have an axe to grind. Usually, their anger has little or nothing to do with what you?re saying or what your situation is.

Crossroads can be difficult places. Good luck on whatever path you follow from here.

Scientists build logic gates out of gut bacteria, then hopefully wash their hands

Ever thought about upgrading your PC by breeding more cores? Or planting a few GBs of extra storage out in the yard? Us neither, until we heard that scientists at Imperial College in London have succeeded in building "some of the basic components of digital devices" out of genetically modified E.Coli. We've seen these germs exploited in a similar way before, but Imperial's researchers claim they're the first to make bacterial logic gates that can be fitted together to form more complex gates and potentially whole biological processors. Aside from our strange upgrade fantasies, such processors could one day be implanted into living bodies -- to weed out cancer cells, clean arteries and deliver medication exactly where it's needed. So much for Activia.

(AP) ? Turkey's state-run television says a group of inmates have escaped from a prison in Turkey's quake-hit region.

State-run TRT television said the inmates fled after a powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey on Sunday, killing at least 85 people and sparking widespread panic as it collapsed dozens of buildings into piles of twisted steel and chunks of concrete.

The report gave no other detail including the number of inmates who fled.

The quake hit Turkey's mountainous eastern region with an epicenter in the village of Tabanli, 10 miles (17 kilometers) from Van, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey on Sunday, killing at least 85 people and sparking widespread panic as it collapsed dozens of buildings into piles of twisted steel and chunks of concrete.

Tens of thousands of residents fled into the streets running, screaming and trying to reach relatives on cell phones. As the full extent of the damage became clear, desperate survivors dug into the rubble with their bare hands, trying to rescue the trapped and the injured.

"My wife and child are inside! My 4-month-old baby is inside!" CNN-Turk television showed one young man sobbing outside a collapsed building in Van, the provincial capital.

The quake hit Turkey's mountainous eastern region at 1:41 p.m. with an epicenter in the village of Tabanli, 10 miles (17 kilometers) from Van, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

State-run TRT television reported that 59 people were killed and 150 injured in the eastern town of Ercis, 25 others died in Van and a child died in the nearby province of Bitlis.

Turkish scientists estimated that up to 1,000 people could already be dead, due to low local housing standards and the size of the quake.

The hardest hit was Ercis, a city of 75,000 close to the Iranian border, which lies on the Ercis Fault in one of Turkey's most earthquake-prone zones. Van, some 55 miles (90 kilometers) to the south, also suffered substantial damage.

As many as 80 buildings collapsed in Ercis, including a dormitory, and 10 buildings collapsed in Van, the Turkish Red Crescent said. Some highways also caved in, CNN-Turk television reported.

NTV television said hundreds of injured people were treated at the state hospital in Ercis. Survivors in Ercis complained of lack of heavy machinery to remove chunks of cement floors that pancaked onto each other, NTV television reported.

"There are so many dead. Several buildings have collapsed. There is too much destruction," Ercis mayor Zulfikar Arapoglu told NTV television. "We need urgent aid. We need medics."

In Van, terrified residents spilled into the streets screaming. Rescue workers and residents scrambled, using only their hands and basic shovels, to save those who were trapped.

Residents sobbed outside the ruins of one flattened eight-story building, hoping that missing relatives would be rescued.

Witnesses said eight people were pulled from the rubble, but frequent aftershocks were hampering search efforts, CNN-Turk reported.

U.S. scientists recorded eight aftershocks within three hours of the quake, including two with a magnitude of 5.6.

Serious damage and casualties were also reported in the district of Celebibag, near Ercis.

"There are many people under the rubble," Veysel Keser, mayor of Celebibag, told NTV. "People are in agony, we can hear their screams for help. We need urgent help."

He said many buildings had collapsed, including student dormitories, hotels and gas stations.

Nazmi Gur, a legislator from Van, was at his nephew's funeral when the quake struck. The funeral ceremony was cut short and he rushed back to help with rescues.

"At least six buildings had collapsed. We managed to rescue a few people, but I saw at least five bodies," Gur told The Associated Press by telephone. "There is no coordinated rescue at the moment, everyone is doing what they can."

"It was such a powerful temblor. It lasted for such a long time," Gur said. "(Now) there is no electricity, there is no heating, everyone is outside in the cold."

Many residents fled Van to seek shelter with relatives in nearby villages.

"I am taking my family to our village, our house was fine but there were cracks in our office building," Sahabettin Ozer, 47, said by telephone as he drove to the village of Muradiye.

NTV said Van's airport was damaged and planes were being diverted to neighboring cities.

Authorities had no information yet on remote villages but the governor was touring the region by helicopter and the government sent in tents, field kitchens and blankets. Some in Ercis reported shortages of bread, Turkey's staple food, due to damages to bakeries.

Houses also collapsed in the province of Bitlis, where an 8-year-old girl was killed, authorities said, and the quake toppled the minarets of two mosques in the nearby province of Mus.

There was no immediate information about a recently restored 10th century Armenian church, Akdamar Church, which is perched on a rocky island in the nearby Lake Van.

Turkey lies in one of the world's most active seismic zones and is crossed by numerous fault lines. Lake Van, where Sunday's earthquake hit, is the country's most earthquake-prone region.

The Kandilli observatory, Turkey's main seismography center, said Sunday's quake was capable of killing many people.

"We are estimating a death toll between 500 and 1,000," Mustafa Erdik, head of the Kandilli observatory, told a televised news conference.

The earthquake also shook buildings in neighboring Armenia and Iran.

In the Armenian capital of Yerevan, 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Ercis, people rushed into the streets fearing buildings would collapse but no damage or injuries were immediately reported. Armenia was the site of a devastating earthquake in 1988 that killed 25,000 people.

Sunday's quake caused panic among residents in several Iranian towns close to the Turkish border, and cut phone links and caused cracks in buildings in the city of Chaldoran, Iranian state TV reported. The quake was also felt in the northeastern Iranian towns of Salmas, Maku, Khoi but no damage was immediately reported.

Israel on Sunday offered humanitarian assistance despite a rift in relations following an 2010 Israeli navy raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that left nine Turks dead. In September, Turkey expelled the Israeli ambassador and suspended military ties because Israel has not apologized. Israel has sent rescue teams to Turkey for past earthquakes in times of closer ties.

Turkey sees frequent earthquakes. In 1999, two earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 7 struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

More recently, a 6.0-magnitude quake in March 2010 killed 51 people in eastern Turkey, while in 2003, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake killed 177 people in the southeastern city of Bingol.

Turkey's worst earthquake in the last century came in 1939 in the eastern city of Erzincan, causing an estimated 160,000 deaths.

Istanbul, Turkey's largest city with more than 12 million people, lies in northwestern Turkey near a major fault line. Authorities say Istanbul is ill-prepared for a major earthquake and experts have warned that overcrowding and faulty construction could lead to the deaths of over 40,000 people if a major earthquake struck the city.

World Population Close to Reaching 7 Billion (ContributorNetwork)

The United Nations Population Fund announced this week that the world's count of human inhabitants on the planet will surpass 7 billion this month, but there are few celebrations, even though the U.N. entitles its report, "People and Possibilities." This is because scientists in the environmental and social realms long have warned of overpopulation challenges that include hunger, pollution, global warming and in the extreme the conflicts of warfare and genocide.

America's Public Broadcasting Service has explored the issue in a series of reports under the moniker of "Our Changing Planet." The reports describe how the world's population has skyrocketed from an estimated 300 million during the time of Christ to 1 billion at the time of the American Revolution to today's 7 billion figure. Furthermore, experts predict that unless current trends are impacted, another 1 billion people will be added every dozen years or so.

One main cause is improved modern medicine such as the advent of antibiotics, which has extended the average lifespan to 68 years, up from 48 in 1960. Another cause is tied to cultures in which birth control and contraception are either ignored, frowned upon, or considered as outright evil.

Our Changing Planet reports signs of progress. A typical woman in Kenya gives birth to 4.4 children during her lifetime, compared to 8.1 as recently as near the turn of the millennium. In Iran, the average is 2.8, down from 6.8. In Bangladesh, it's 3.1, compared to the previous 6.4. Communal education is credited, along with increased availability of safe, humane contraceptives and steps away from traditions of child marriages.

The United Nations is scheduled to release a report on further action steps on Oct. 26. Meanwhile, a group known as Population Connection is protesting an early October vote by the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee to defund the U.N. Population Fund. The vote was along political party lines, with Republicans protesting that the U.N. is promoting abortion. Democrats and U.N. officials deny this is the case.

Cards' manager holds winning hand in Game 1

La Russa calls on Craig in key moment, and pinch-hitter delivers winning hit

St. Louis' David Freese, right, celebrates with Jon Jay after Freese scored on a RBI single by Allen Craig in the sixth inning on Wednesday.

updated 11:13 p.m. ET Oct. 19, 2011

ST. LOUIS - Texas manager Ron Washington joked about not being able to match wits with Tony La Russa.

No joke.

Who can, these days?

The St. Louis boss looked like a genius once again, especially when Allen Craig pinch-hit for ace Chris Carpenter and delivered a go-ahead single Wednesday night that sent the Cardinals past the Texas Rangers 3-2 in Game 1 of the World Series.

Craig's slicing hit with two outs in the sixth inning fell inches in front of sliding right fielder Nelson Cruz. Game 1 was just that tight throughout a cold, damp evening.

It was a game perfectly suited for La Russa - lots of bunts, intentional walks and pitching changes. And in a postseason in which he's made all the right moves, the 67-year-old manager was at the top of his game.

"It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out," Cardinals outfielder Lance Berkman said. "But I feel like we have to win the National League-style games if we're going to win this thing and tonight was a National League-style game - 3-2, good pitching, good defense, timely hitting.

"I don't think that we want to get into a gorilla ball-type series with these guys. We'll see what happens when we add the DH and go to the American League ballpark, but I think when we have the National League style and we have the advantage we have to capitalize."

The Cardinals did, barely. A sliding stop by first baseman Albert Pujols helped prevent Texas from taking the lead on Carpenter's final pitch in the sixth.

St. Louis even won without its Rally Squirrel. There were no sightings of the elusive critter still roaming Busch Stadium - good thing for the rodent, too, because La Russa probably would've devised a way to catch him.

Game 2 is Thursday night, with Jaime Garcia starting for the Cards against Colby Lewis. Texas has not lost two straight games since Aug. 23-25.

In a postseason where St. Louis and Texas starters have struggled, Carpenter and C.J. Wilson each pitched well enough. They both left in the bottom of the sixth when the managerial wheels started to spin.

It was 2-all when the Rangers worked around eighth-place hitter Nick Punto with a four-pitch walk that put runners at the corners with two outs.

"I know they had either Carpenter coming up or a pinch-hitter, and with Ogando warming up behind me, I have confidence that he's going to come in and get that guy out," Wilson said.

La Russa did not hesitate, pulling Carpenter and sending up Craig, a versatile player who was injured for much of the season. Washington countered by bringing in hard-throwing reliever Alexi Ogando.

Rather risky lately, trying to play baseball chess with La Russa. As Washington said a day earlier: "Well, I don't think I can ever live up to matching a wit with Tony La Russa."

La Russa liked Craig's chances.

"Cold weather game, sitting on the bench, Ogando. It's not a very good situation," La Russa said. "But he's got a history in our system, that's why we like him so much. He should have a really good career."

All the pieces in place, it was time to play - and what followed was the play of the game.

Craig swung through two fastballs, then hit a drive toward the right field line. Cruz tried to make a sliding catch, except the ball bounced just before it reached him and thudded off his left leg for an RBI single.

"It was close. I think the dirt caught me," Cruz said.

Craig's single scored NL championship series MVP David Freese, the St. Louis area prep star who led off with a double. Freese has hit in 11 straight postseason games.

"Man, he's tough," Craig said of Ogando. "He came right at me with fastballs, and I missed the first two. Then that last one I was trying to get the barrel on it, make the defense make a play. Fortunate, kept it fair, and Cruz made a great attempt on that. It was a great play all-around."

Ahead, La Russa coaxed three scoreless innings from his deep bullpen. Five relievers did the job, with Jason Motte closing for his fifth save of the postseason.

This was the first time Texas had ever played in St. Louis. Yet Josh Hamilton, Cruz and the big-hitting Rangers looked a lot like the team that fizzled at the plate in last year's World Series against San Francisco.

Each team wound up with six hits. The wild-card Cardinals just did more with them.

Berkman put St. Louis ahead with a two-run single in the fourth. Mike Napoli tied it with a two-run homer in the fifth.

Carpenter earned his eighth postseason win, breaking the team record he shared with Bob Gibson. Of course, all of Gibby's victories came in the World Series.

Texas nearly took the lead on Carpenter's final pitch. Instead, Pujols smothered Michael Young's grounder behind the bag and tossed to Carpenter to end the sixth with a runner on third.

Carpenter helped himself with a nifty play in the first inning, diving to catch a toss from Pujols and tagging the bag with his glove. He didn't argue when La Russa removed him - all the Cards know too well to doubt La Russa's smarts.

Cardinals relievers Fernando Salas, Marc Rzepczynski, Octavio Dotel, Arthur Rhodes and Motte finished.

Wilson fell to 0-5 in his last seven postseason starts, dating to last year.

The Texas lefty recently spent 2 1/2 minutes in a Dallas cryotherapy chamber, where liquid nitrogen lowered the temperature to 295 degrees below zero trying to speed body recovery. It was a bit warmer at the ballpark, at 49 degrees for the first pitch.

Wilson became the first pitcher to lose an All-Star game, an AL division series game, an AL championship series game and a World Series game in the same year, STATS LLC said.

Napoli kept up his season of slugging, hitting a two-run homer in the fifth that made it 2-all. He had come into the game 3 for 3 lifetime against Carpenter and had been the only Texas hitter to homer off him, but he bounced into a double play with two runners on his first time up. He avenged that with an opposite-field drive to right.

Traded twice within a week last winter, Napoli blossomed in Texas, prompting Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon to pronounce it "The Year of the Napoli" during the AL playoffs.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the fourth after Pujols hit - or was hit by pitch, more precisely. The St. Louis star was plunked on the lower left leg to start the inning, Matt Holliday sliced a double and Berkman chopped a two-run single down the first base line.

Players, umpires and techs needed a little time to work out the kinks.

Freese saw Ian Kinsler's leadoff grounder glance off his glove at third base for a single, and stared at the glove that betrayed him. The next inning, Adrian Beltre doubled off Freese's leather.

Third base umpire Ron Kulpa missed his first call in a Series. He ruled Beltre caught Pujols' liner to third when the ball actually bounced in the opening inning.

And there was a glitch when "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery started to sing the national anthem. The microphone didn't work and he got a replacement. The delay came with Michelle Obama and Jill Biden standing on the mound to honor military veterans. The first lady's husband stood in the same place to throw out the first ball at the 2009 All-Star game.

Lions, tigers, bears run loose at Ohio exotic animal farm (Reuters)

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) ? A shoot-to-kill order on lions, tigers, bears and other animals on the loose from an Ohio exotic pet farm was lifted at daylight on Wednesday as police armed with tranquilizer guns scoured the surrounding neighborhoods.

It was still unclear what caused the death of Terry Thompson, the owner of the farm in the east-central Ohio town of Zanesville, whose body was found on the ground late Tuesday when authorities went to the site to check on him following reports of wild animals running free in the area.

"There are 30-35 animals accounted for and may be more on the property," Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz told ABC News early Wednesday.

Earlier Lutz said his deputies had shot dead about 25 animals. One of them was a bear that attacked a law enforcement officer, Jack Hanna, director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo, told ABC News.

Another eight animals, most of them described as "big cats," were still loose on Wednesday, authorities said.

One official put the figure higher.

"We're still concerned about animals that are out," Kim Hambel, director of operations for the Muskingham County Sheriff's Department, told CNN.

"We sent a deputy, a wildlife officer and a vet into the property to do a search and recovery. We think we still have 14 to 15 animals unaccounted for."

Lutz, who had issued a shoot-to-kill order overnight, said daylight would allow his force to tranquilize animals for capture instead.

"If there is any attempt we can do to tranquilize we will do that," he said.

Lutz described the animals found as "mature, very big and aggressive." The farm was home to a plethora of species including grizzly bears, black bears, lions, tigers and cheetahs.

Police were warning residents in the area to stay inside to keep safe, and area schools were ordered closed for Wednesday as a precaution. So far, no members of the public were known to have been hurt or killed by the animals.

Police work focused on securing the area around the farm, near Interstate 70 about a mile west of the city limits of Zanesville, and making sure the animals were taken care of.

Deputies, their search efforts hampered by heavy rain, were combing the area for any animals still missing.

Veterinarians from the Columbus Zoo, and from The Wilds, located about 20 miles away, were standing by to offer assistance if needed. The Wilds is North America's largest Conservation Facility for Endangered Species.

Hanna said personnel from The Wilds were called in years ago to help local officials over complaints from neighbors about the wild exotic animal farm.

Lutz said authorities were searching for the animals from their vehicles and were not walking through the heavily wooded rugged area. He said his office was also relying on neighbors and citizens in the area to report any animals they see.

Officials in Zanesville and the West Muskingum Local School district have said schools would be closed on Wednesday, while officials in other districts have said schools would close or were considering delaying opening hours.

Selena Gomez granted temporary restraining order (AP)

BURBANK, Calif. ? A judge has granted Selena Gomez a temporary restraining order from a man with a history of mental illness who police say threatened the singer-actress.

Court records show the "Wizards of Waverly Place" star was granted the order Thursday in Burbank, which is north of downtown Los Angeles. Thomas Brodnicki is required to stay 100 yards away from Gomez and her workplace until a Nov. 4 hearing, when the order may be extended for three years.

Gomez wrote in a sworn declaration that she is in "extreme fear" of Brodnicki.

The filings, first reported Monday by celebrity website TMZ, state police were notified by mental health workers that the 46-year-old had threatened to harm or kill the actress while on a psychiatric hold.

Attempts to reach Brodnicki were unsuccessful.

The 'poignant and gory' Walking Dead premiere (The Week)

New York ? AMC's hit zombie apocalypse drama launched its second season Sunday night. Will season two be as successful as the first?

AMC launched the second season of its ratings juggernaut, The Walking Dead, Sunday night, continuing its steady rotation of critically-acclaimed dramas (Mad Men, Breaking Bad). Though its first season was limited to just six episodes, Dead, a Lord of the Flies-like account of a band of survivors weathering a zombie apocalypse, became a water-cooler staple thanks to its riveting attack sequences, boundary-pushing gore, and insights into human nature. Ten months after the last episode of Walking Dead aired, season two picks up right where the action left off. The caravan of survivors is fleeing zombie-ridden Atlanta for safety at Fort Benning, and the action, critics say, is "simple, poignant, and gory." Will the show's sophomore season further raise expectations?

Yes. The show is better than ever: This season is just as addicting, says Hank Steuver at The Washington Post, and yet "somehow sleeker and better paced." The characters are more developed, making the show "less predictable and more frightening." A highway-side zombie attack in the premiere is "thrillingly scary," and a sequence during which a child goes missing is "murder on your stress level." The end result is a series that has found "the right mix of believable terror and goopy gross-out" ? making for a fantastic evening of television.
"The Walking Dead comes back to life for second season on AMC"

Actually, it's looking a little lifeless: It's hard to shake the feeling that The Walking Dead, AMC's biggest ratings hit, is getting a free pass when it comes to quality, says Ken Tucker at Entertainment Weekly. Sure, the "gross-out scenes continue to be impressive," and the episode's final moment was haunting. But the series lacks the "depth of character, twists of plot, and narrative momentum that gives Breaking Bad and Mad Men both their gravity and their spark." With double the number of episodes this season, however, there's hope for more character and dramatic growth to come.
"The Walking Dead season premiere review: Running away from/killing zombies. Is that all there is?"

It needs to tap its full potential: The Walking Dead continues to suffer from an identity crisis, says Scott Meslow at The Atlantic. Is it a "sharply-written character drama" or a show that's content to coast on "an hour of generically gory thrills each week"? While the writing department struggles with this dilemma, the show's production values remain unparalleled. The season two premiere was a "fantastic-looking, stylishly-directed episode," and truly thrilling. There's potential for greatness here, but, in the meantime, the show's "virtues are plentiful enough to suffer through its vices."
"The Walking Dead still has an identity crisis"

Zachary Quinto Opens Up About Life 'As A Gay Man' (omg!)

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- "Star Trek" actor Zachary Quinto has decided to publicly reveal he is gay in a new interview and on a personal blog post, both of which hit the web on Sunday.

Following an eight-month stint in the New York City revival of "Angels in America" (where the 34-year old played a man who abandoned his AIDS-stricken boyfriend), Zachary told New York Magazine he was left in deep contemplation regarding the play's dark themes.

"[The role was] the most challenging thing I've ever done as an actor and the most rewarding," he said of the award-winning Tony Kushner play, in an interview posted on the mag's website on Sunday. "And at the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like there's still so much work to be done, and there's still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed."

Zachary -- who will next be seen on the big screen in the upcoming thriller, "Margin Call" -- again referenced his sexuality while discussing the tragic death of 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer, a gay teenager who took his own life last month after being bullied.

"And again, as a gay man I look at that and say there's a hopelessness that surrounds it, but as a human being I look at it and say 'Why? Where's this disparity coming from, and why can't we, as a culture and society, dig deeper to examine that?'" he told the mag. "We're terrified of facing ourselves."

In a personal post on ZacharyQuinto.com, the actor said Jamey's suicide prompted him to live his own life publicly.

"in light of jamey's death - it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it - is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality," he wrote. "our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country.

"i believe in the power of intention to change the landscape of our society - and it is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action," he continued. "jamey rodemeyer's life changed mine. and while his death only makes me wish that i had done this sooner - i am eternally grateful to him for being the catalyst for change within me."
