Oil & Gas - Argentina, Falkland Islands - Falkland frontrunners left off Argentina's 20-year ban

Argentina has banned four oil and gas companies involved in offshore oil and gas exploration near the Falkland Islands, oddly enough the two firms involved in the Falkland Islands' first commercially viable discovery were not mentioned.

Falkland Oil and Gas (AIM: FOGL), Borders & Southern Petroleum (AIM: BOR), Argos Resources (AIM: ARG.L) and Desire Petroleum (AIM: DES) were banned from operating in Argentine territory for the next 20 years via official decree.

No mention was made of junior explorer Rockhopper (AIM: RKH) and Premier Oil (LSE: PMO) to whom Rockhopper farmed-out 60% of its licenses in the North Falklands basin in 2012, including the archipelagos' first commercially viable discovery Sea Lion.

Rockhopper and Premier, who recently upped their initial production expectations, were, however, mentioned in Argentina's blacklist in June.

Argentina, who fought and lost a 74-day war with the UK in 1982 over the sovereignty of the islands, claim the firms require approval from Argentine authorities given the Falkland basins sit on the Argentine continental shelf, which the country claims as national territory.

Despite Argentina's threats of legal action against E&P firms, Stephen Luxton, director of the Falkland Islands' Department of Mineral Resources, recently told BNamericas that the pressure has not materially affected development, however, companies with interests in Argentina are inevitably not that keen on working in the Falklands.

In related news Argos Resources (AIM: ARG) is pursuing a farm-out partner for its PL001 production license, adjacent to the Sea Lion discovery, in order to further exploration drilling, chairman Ian Thomson said in the company's latest half-year report. The junior posted a US$1.2mn loss in the first half of 2013 compared to a US$0.8mn loss in 1H12.

Argos's most up-to-date competent persons report for its 1,126km2 licensed area describes 52 prospects and 40 leads with a total unrisked potential of 3.1Bb of prospective recoverable resources in the most likely case and more than 10Bb in the upside case.

Soldado 'can't wait' for first north London derby in Tottenham colours

The Spain international forward has stated that he understands the importance of the clash with Arsenal and that Andre Villas-Boas? men want three points.

Arsenal and Tottenham meet this Sunday in the first north London derby of the new campaign, with the sides having different fortunes in the transfer market this summer.

While Arsenal are yet to bring in any new faces of note, Spurs? side looks markedly different to the team that finished off last season against Sunderland.

With no Gareth Bale, Tottenham have blooded new faces Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue, Paulinho and Roberto Soldado in their opening two league fixtures, and the quartet are set to face Spurs? local rivals for the first time at the weekend.

Former Valencia man Soldado has stated that he and the other new players understand the importance of the fixture against Arsenal and will do everything in their powers to overcome Arsene Wenger?s men on Sunday.

?Yes, my team-mates have told me what the derby means,? Soldado confirmed.

?Tottenham against Arsenal is one of the most beautiful games for the club and everyone who has come in from outside will want to play in it.

?It's the game with the biggest rivalry for Tottenham and I cannot wait to play in this environment and I hope we can get the three points.?

Soldado stated that he has fit in well at White Hart Lane and is eager to repay the club?s faith in him by getting the goals to win important matches.

?It's always important to score goals and I hope to keep on doing this for the team,? the striker continued.

?The welcome I have got since my presentation here in the friendly against Espanyol has been great.

?To hear the fans singing your name is special and I hope it happens a lot more throughout the season.

?The first few games I think are the hardest of the season and we have played well, but we can still improve a lot.?

Arsenal away is a fixture that Spurs fans have looked forward to in recent seasons but have ultimately suffered overwhelming disappointment. In the last two campaigns, despite taking the lead on both occasions, Tottenham have been hammered 5-2 by their local rivals at the Emirates Stadium.

Soldado is correct in his statement that the Spurs team can improve, and they will need to offer more threat going forward if they are to get the goals to win the game this weekend. The Spurs fans should be confident ahead of the clash though and the likelihood of their team shipping anywhere near five goals again has been lessened by the solid start the side has made.

With new men Capoue and Paulinho in the boiler room and a settled back four, Tottenham have looked like a more difficult team to break down, but will face a stern test at the weekend.

Despite the new faces in the Spurs line-up, the Gunners can expect a combative hostility from a Tottenham side looking to finally dethrone them from a top four place in the division.

A Deadly Gamble: Egypt?s Salafists May Now Regret Support for the Military

A month ago, the Nour Party, the largest political group to emerge from the ultraconservative Salafist movement, was seen as Egypt?s kingmaker when it dramatically joined the military-led ousting of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi. They then proceeded to shape the interim government, vetoing a nominee for Prime Minister in the first week after Morsi was removed from power. Now, though, the party?s fortunes have reversed. With the body count hovering over 1,000 following the military-backed regime?s assault on Islamist protests last week, the Nour Party is fast losing its political relevance and could even end up a victim of the military coup it initially supported.

?They gambled, and obviously they are losing,? says Khalil al-Anani, an expert on Islamist politics and a fellow at the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C., referring to the Nour Party?s decision to back Morsi?s removal. ?The military used them to pass the coup, and they aimed to achieve some political gains, but obviously they are not.? As for those Salafist organizations that sided with Morsi, al-Anani says, ?if they not arrested, they will be marginalized and excluded.?

?The state?s plan is to ban Islamic parties or exclude them from the political process,? he adds. The Prime Minister in the current government, Hazem el-Beblawi, on Saturday proposed legally dissolving the Muslim Brotherhood, a measure that, al-Anani says, would not end the group as a vast and deeply rooted social movement.

(MORE: Viewpoint: Egypt No Longer Matters)

Even after government forces moved in last Wednesday to crush protest camps organized by the regime?s opponents, leaving hundreds dead, the Nour Party and the older grassroots movement that it is linked to, al-Dawa al-Salafiya, meaning the Salafi Call, refused to join their fellow Islamists in calling for protest marches to denounce the massacre. Instead, the two groups issued a statement urging dialogue and reconciliation ? a statement that, so far, both the regime and the Muslim Brotherhood have ignored.

Representatives of the Nour Party did not immediately return TIME?s requests for comment.

The mass political violence that has taken hold of Egypt has bludgeoned away most political nuances ? factions hoping to carve out a third position in the binary conflict between the military and the supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood are having trouble finding a means to register their views. This includes both Salafists and the liberal revolutionaries opposed to both Morsi and the military ? those who carry the banner of the January 2011 uprising against dictator Hosni Mubarak.

The events of the past 24 hours deepened the sense of crisis and conflict gripping the country. The government acknowledged that its security forces killed 36 Islamist detainees attempting to escape a Cairo prison; on the same day, unknown assailants reportedly killed at least 24 police officers in an attack in the Sinai Peninsula. Meanwhile, a court reportedly ordered Mubarak released from prison. Although authorities might still find a way to keep the deposed President in custody, the announcement further unsettled a country still reeling from several days of violence.

The rise and fall of the Salafist movement is a revealing subplot in the current chaotic chapter of Egypt?s history. The Nour Party is in fact just one offshoot of a large and complex Islamist movement with different strains, ranging from from pacifist to jihadi, apolitical to confrontational, across the Middle East and beyond. In general, Salafists adhere to a strict interpretation of Islam, many of them seeking to follow the practices of al-salaf al-salih (the pious ancestors), the earliest generations of Muslims after the Prophet Muhammad.

(PHOTOS:?Clashes Erupt in Egypt as Protesters March Against Earlier Bloodshed)

Founded in Alexandria in the late 1970s, members of Egypt?s al-Dawa al-Salafiya largely stayed out of politics under the government of President Anwar Sadat ? whose assassination in 1981 was attributed to Islamists ? and later under the three-decade dictatorship of Mubarak. Participation in official politics would mean sacrificing religious purity. Al-Dawa focused on preaching and conventional religious outreach. Other Salafist groups engaged in political activism and some, including a jihadi trend, openly confronted the state. Activist or not, nearly all branches of the Salafist movement faced some form of repression under Mubarak.

That?dynamic changed with the 2011 popular overthrow of Mubarak. Salafists formed several political parties, and Nour emerged as the largest one,?leading a coalition that won the second largest bloc of seats after the Freedom and Justice Party, the Muslim Brotherhood?linked party, in Egypt?s 2011-12 parliamentary elections. It was also a key ally of Morsi when his government withstood major protests in late 2012 that surrounded the controversial drafting (and eventual passage) of a constitution critics deemed unfairly skewed toward Islamist positions.

But in 2013, the Nour Party distanced itself from Morsi, refusing to take a side during the June 30 uprising against him and the Muslim Brotherhood. Days later, when General Abdul Fattah al-Sisi announced Morsi?s removal, the Nour Party chairman Younes Makhyoun was standing beside him along with a tableau of other politicians and religious figures.

However Salafists, and Islamists generally, were never uniformly supportive of the military?s removal of Morsi, and several groups have stood by their allies in the Muslim Brotherhood, including al-Gama?a al-Islamiya, a group that waged an armed insurgency against the Mubarak regime in the 1990s but later renounced violence. A number of the Gama?a members have been detained in the regime?s mass arrest of more than 1,000 Islamists across the country. The popular Salafist politician and former presidential candidate Hazem Abu Ismail, who was disqualified before the 2012 elections, was arrested and his assets frozen following the military?s removal of Morsi.

(MORE: Egyptian ?Liberals? Are Out for Blood)

Another group that has sided with the Brotherhood is the Watan (Homeland) Party, a group founded by Emad Abdel-Ghafour and 150 other members who resigned from Nour in January. Watan, which does not identify as Salafist but rather as a party with a vaguely defined ?Islamic reference? and a centrist, technocratic ethos, has joined the Anticoup Alliance, the main umbrella group mobilizing against the military-backed government.

In an interview on Monday, Watan Party spokesman and U.S.-educated businessman Mohamed Okda said his party would not participate in the military-sponsored constitution-drafting process. Even Okda, with his talk of building a ?modern political party? and mounting ?nonviolent activities? against the current regime, admitted that the space for acts of compromise were limited.

?There is just mass killing outside. I am waiting to be detained any time,? he said. ?How can you expect us to participate if you?re detaining people and killing them??

1D goes 3-D in boy band's debut feature film

LONDON (AP) ? In the tradition of great music movies, One Direction's feature-film debut has sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll ? just without the sex or the drugs.

The Morgan Spurlock-directed 3-D documentary "One Direction: This Is Us" hangs out with Harry, Louis, Liam, Niall and Zayn backstage, at home and on the road, and comes to the conclusion that the five well-coiffed lads who have conquered the world are, well, pretty nice.

Spurlock ? who made his name with socially engaged documentaries such as "Super Size Me" and "Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?" ? is on a mission to convert unbelievers (and even Beliebers) into One Direction fans.

"These boys are so charming and so fantastic, I challenge you to go to the movie and not like them after the film is done," Spurlock said Monday at a news conference with the band ahead of the movie's world premiere Tuesday in London.

"Part of the reason they've been so incredibly successful with their fans is that they are so incredibly grounded and normal, and that's what comes off in the movie. ... You see five guys who are the same five guys they were three years ago."

Three years ago the five teenagers auditioned individually for TV talent show "The X Factor," where svengali Simon Cowell had the idea of putting them together as a boy band.

They didn't win the competition, but they went on to top charts and win young hearts around the world with their cheeky personalities and ever-so-slightly edgy pop.

Part concert movie, part behind-the-scenes documentary, "This Is Us" follows One Direction on the road, from London to Tokyo to Mexico City. It promises to show the group as fans have never seen before ? up close, personal and in 3-D.

Spurlock was given access to the band members' families as well as to the band members themselves at home, in hotel rooms, in stadiums and on tour buses ? though it's unlikely to be a completely candid, warts-and-all look at the band. Cowell is a producer on the movie, which is aimed firmly at the young global army of "Directioners" who helped make the lads stars.

Spurlock has said he was drawn to the movie by the chance to experience the closest thing our decade will see to Beatlemania.

"You suddenly realize it isn't just a British or an American phenomenon," he said. "Everywhere they go they are being chased by hordes of fans. We were in Mexico City and there's 5,000 people camping outside the hotel. This is such a massive global phenomenon, and it's only growing. It was incredible to see."

For the band members, whose feet have barely touched the ground since 2010, it was a rare chance to reflect on how far they've come.

"Because so much is happening to us you kind of just lose it all," said Louis Tomlinson. "It's great just to sit back and watch it back and remember and relive those moments."

Band mate Liam Payne said making the film had been "nerve-racking." But the lives of the five young men ? none of them over 21 ? have become so surreal that the experience of being filmed offstage and even in bed was almost normal.

"In a way it was really strange having the cameras around, but at the same time it didn't make that much difference," said Harry Styles. "It was kind of just getting on with your day while having someone in your way when you're trying to get out the door."

The band members gently deflected questions about whether scenes of partying or other debauchery had been left on the cutting room floor.

"We like to think we're rock 'n' roll, but we're not, really," said Tomlinson. "It's a shame."

"One Direction: This Is Us" opens in Britain Aug. 29 and in the United States Aug. 30.

Montage: Harrison Ford's Finger Point of Doom

It's not unlike William Shatner's hand gestures and dramatic pauses, except for the fact that, despite watching this montage with Conan O'Brien, Ford doesn't seem like the type who'll ever be quite self-aware enough to turn into a deliberate (less funny) self-parody shtick...

Or does he...?

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Students and staff at California State University, Long Beach, were briefly urged to evacuate or take shelter on Tuesday due to an armed subject on campus, but the school quickly issued an "all clear" saying that there was no threat.

The initial alert had said police were "engaging the threat" on campus and urged students, faculty and staff to evacuate.

North Korea unveils 'native' Android smartphone

North Korea unveils local Android phone that likely isn't local at all

North Korea likes to say that it's on the cutting edge, even if it usually isn't -- and that now includes a locally-built smartphone, the AS1201 Arirang. We don't know much about the Android handset, but state media claims that it's made in Pyongyang and ships with a domestically produced app. As you'd imagine, many outside of North Korea are skeptical of the AS1201's supposed roots. While it's difficult to verify North Korea Tech's suspicions that a Chinese firm makes the device on North Korea's behalf, the hardware is using stock Android -- you know, the OS designed by those "capitalist American pig-dogs" at Google. There's also the question of the device's real-world usefulness. As long as North Korea bans mobile internet use, the Ariang won't be much more capable than your typical feature phone.
