Atlanta holds on late for 30-28 win over Seattle (AP)

SEATTLE ? Matt Ryan was left with that stomach-churning, helpless feeling.

After doing everything right in a brilliant first half, Atlanta's star was stuck standing on the sideline and watching Seattle line up for an unlikely field goal that would cap a massive Falcons meltdown.

Ryan threw for 291 yards and a touchdown and came up with key scrambles all day to keep Atlanta's offense moving. But he had to wait out Steven Hauschka's miss of a 61-yard attempt with 13 seconds left as the Falcons escaped with a 30-28 win over the Seahawks on Sunday.

"When you're not on the field and have to watch the defense go down, it's always nerve-racking," Ryan said.

Atlanta badly needed a victory to keep up with everyone else in the loaded NFC South. The Falcons nearly let a 27-7 lead slip away over the final 28 minutes.

"I'm sure as you watch the highlights through tonight you're going to see there were a number of teams that had similar leads and had maybe different outcomes, but you never have enough points on the board in the National Football League," Atlanta coach Mike Smith said. "Any lead can turn back at any time, and again I think that they did a very good job in there in the second half. It was a tale of two halves, and we were fortunate enough to win."

Ryan picked apart Seattle's secondary in the first half. Michael Turner bulled his way for a pair of touchdowns, and Atlanta's defense kept the Seahawks floundering when they had the ball. Ryan hit on 13 of his first 15 attempts and had 164 yards passing by halftime.

Turner had touchdown runs of 21 and 1 yards, Tony Gonzalez caught a 1-yard TD on Atlanta's opening possession, and Matt Bryant kicked three field goals, the second of which gave Atlanta a 27-7 lead early in the third quarter.

Rookie Julio Jones caught 11 passes for 127 yards.

But the biggest plays for Atlanta came after Seattle trimmed the lead to 30-28 on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Tarvaris Jackson to Ben Obomanu with 8:13 left.

Atlanta didn't get points on the drive but converted three times on third down. One came on a penalty and another on a completion to Gonzalez. But the biggest conversion came with 4:05 left when Ryan ran for 10 yards.

The first down ran an extra two minutes off the clock before Atlanta was forced to punt, and Seattle was forced to take over with 1:49 remaining at its 15 with just one timeout remaining.

Ryan finished with another 26 yards rushing ? more than Seattle starting running back Marshawn Lynch ? and the Falcons were 9 of 16 on third down.

"You have to do what you have to do. Certainly not the way that we design things or not my intention when the ball is snapped," Ryan said. "Sometimes that's the way it shakes out. A couple of times in the second half Seattle had really good coverage and guys locked up and fortunately they don't have a spy or anything like that for me."

Jackson threw for a career-high 319 yards and had his first three-touchdown game since throwing four TDs at Arizona in December 2008.

Atlanta gave up 234 yards of offense to Seattle in the second half.

"A few games started off good, but we've got to be able to finish, and this game came close," Atlanta's John Abraham said. "(It) should have been, not saying a breeze, but it should have been a little more comfortable at the end."

When he took over with 1:49 left, Jackson quickly got Seattle near midfield. The Seahawks caught a break with 41 seconds to go when referee Walt Anderson was buzzed to review the previous completion to Doug Baldwin and stopped the clock.

Sidney Rice was later flagged for a false start. The 5 yards proved huge, as a completion to Zach Miller got Seattle to the Atlanta 43 with 16 seconds remaining, but Jackson was hurried on third down and threw incomplete.

Instead of going for it on fourth down, Seattle coach Pete Carroll sent out Hauschka for a 61-yard attempt that was short and wide left.

Hauschka's career long is 54 yards.

"It was definitely makable, but it was a tough kick. It was into the wind. It wasn't real warm out there so the ball wasn't going as far as it could," Hauschka said. "At altitude or in warm weather, that's a different kick than it was today. It was definitely makable, and I'm glad we got a shot to win the game there at the end, and the next time we'll make it."

Notes: WR Mike Williams left with a concussion suffered on Lynch's TD run. Seattle also lost LB Matt McCoy with a knee injury in the first quarter. ... Atlanta remained perfect (5-0) on the West Coast since Smith took over as coach. ... Ryan's 26 yards rushing tied a career high. ... Seattle plays just once at home (Oct. 30 vs. Cincinnati) until Nov. 13.

Oil pipeline backers run into Nebraska town

The old adage that oil and water don't mix is proving true in Nebraska, where hundreds of people filled a small town gymnasium to protest a proposed oil pipeline they fear could pollute a major U.S. drinking water source.

They came in tour and school buses, vans and a few even on horseback to the West Holt Junior and Senior High School, some wearing cowboy boots and seed company caps, to testify at a U.S. State Department hearing on the proposed $7 billion Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada to Texas.

The hearing Thursday night was one of more than half a dozen the U.S. government is holding along the proposed route of the pipeline. But the western Nebraska gathering was the only one in the rural area that opponents fear is most at risk.

Sparsely populated western Nebraska ? which sits atop the a massive underground lake called the Ogallala Aquifer ? has become the unlikely epicenter of a major international environmental struggle.

"A leak in the Keystone pipeline could conceivably contaminate the entire Ogallala Aquifer, in turn, disrupting the agricultural economy of Nebraska," David Hutchinson, an organic rancher from Rose, Neb., who raises beef, buffalo, goats, potatoes and squash, testified at the hearing.

The struggle has brought together some strange bedfellows. Environmental groups and agricultural interests, normally at odds in the battle over resources, are on the same side fighting the energy industry.

American flags lined the main highway through the town of 1,300 people and signs dotted the flat landscape, with opposition placards outnumbering those in favor by 10 to 1.

Some signs read: "Stop the TransCanada Pipeline," "Save our Water" and "Save the Sandhills."

Rancher Sue Mitchell rounded up seven horses and riders to protest the proposed pipeline outside the meeting.

"We need to protect our water, and our Sandhills," said Mitchell, whose family has raised cattle and quarter horses for 80 years on their Nebraska ranch.

The Sandhills are a region in north-central Nebraska known for native prairie grasses and open spaces. Nebraskans value this region as a natural treasure and they fear the Sandhills could be damaged with an oil spill.

"The Sandhills are so fragile," said Mitchell. "One little spill of oil can ruin all the water."

Farmers worry about a possible contamination of the Ogallala Aquifer, which covers 174,000 square miles touching eight states. The aquifer is used to irrigate a significant percentage of the wheat, corn, cotton, and cattle produced in the United States. Two-thirds of the water in the aquifer is under Nebraska, according to the Water Encyclopedia.

Hutchinson said the water is very near the surface of the land in the Sandhills and there are many springs and artesian wells. A spill could be especially damaging to these sensitive areas, he and other opponents said.

At the hearing, those opposed to the pipeline wore the red colors of their beloved University of Nebraska Cornhuskers football team. Those in favor wore fluorescent orange and yellow T-shirts.

Worried about security, Nebraska State Police blocked all roads leading to the school, but there were no arrests or violence. There was a smattering of whooping and polite applause when each person finished. Some 160 people signed up to speak and 109 people ended up testifying, officials said.

Among those testifying were some representing industries and labor unions, which stand to get jobs from the project.

Michael Whatley, executive vice president of Consumers Energy Reliance, said the pipeline would benefit his organization of truckers, manufacturers, farmers and energy producers.

"People have a legitimate concern when it comes to drinking water," Whatley said. "But TransCanada and the Department of State have put unbelievable requirements on this pipeline, so it will be safe."

A Nebraska lawmaker next week plans to propose a law to the state legislature giving the state authority to regulate oil pipelines, which if passed could pose a further threat to the project.

The hearings are one of the last chances for both sides to air their views before the State Department decides the issue.

"I think we made some progress on getting the pipeline moved," said Mitchell, the rancher on horseback. "We changed some opinions."

SpaceX Unveils Plan for World's First Fully Reusable Rocket (SPACE.com)

The private spaceflight firm SpaceX will try to build the world's first completely reusable rocket and spaceship, a space travel method that could open the gates of Mars for humanity, the company's milionaire CEO Elon Musk announced Thursday (Sept. 29).

A fully reusable rocket would dramatically decrease the cost of lofting cargo and humans to space, making the exploration and colonization of other worlds such as Mars more feasible, Musk said in a speech at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Musk did not guarantee success, acknowledging the daunting task his SpaceX team has taken on. SpaceX released a video animation of its proposed reusable rocket and space capsule system to illustrate how it would work. [Video and photos of SpaceX's reusable rocket plan]

"We will see if this works," Musk said. "And if it does work, it'll be pretty huge."

The hunt for an economic and reusable method for space travel has been a goal of many companies and government agencies from the Space Age's inception.

The only reusable manned spaceships built to date have been NASA's winged space shuttles, which were retired this year. The shuttles used reusable orbiters and solid rocket boosters for 30 years, but the system was not completely reusable.

Each of NASA's 135 shuttle missions also used a disposable 15-story external fuel tank. The tank was jettisoned once a shuttle reached orbit and ultimately burned up during re-entry.

Going to Mars?

Musk has said repeatedly over the years that he founded SpaceX in 2002 with the primary goal of helping humanity establish a lasting presence beyond Earth. Such expansion is necessary to ensure our species' survival, according to Musk, since a catastrophic asteroid strike or other calamity could one day wipe out life on our home planet.

Mars is a prime candidate for human settlement, and Musk has said he hopes SpaceX can send astronauts to the Red Planet within 10 or 20 years.

Colonizing Mars ? or any other world ? would require ferrying thousands of people and millions of tons of cargo through space. That's just not feasible with today's launch costs, Musk has said.

But a fully reusable rocket could change the equation dramatically. Musk illustrated the point by citing SpaceX's Falcon 9, which costs between $50 million to $60 million per launch in its current configuration.

"But the cost of the fuel and oxygen and so forth is only about $200,000," Musk said."So obviously, if we can reuse the rocket, say, a thousand times, then that would make the capital cost of the rocket for launch only about $50,000." [Vote Now! Best Spaceships of All Time]

?

How it would work

In its video new animation, SpaceX officials detail how their new launch vehicle, which is based on the Falcon 9 rocket, would work.

After separating in orbit, the two stages of the rocket would come back to Earth and land at the launch pad. The stages would not glide back using wings like the space shuttle; rather, they'd descend vertically, eventually settling down on four legs.

They could then be refueled, reintegrated and relaunched.

In the video, the Falcon 9 launches SpaceX's Dragon capsule to the International Space Station. NASA has contracted the company to make cargo flights to the orbiting lab.

Falcon 9 lofted Dragon to Earth orbit for the first time last December, and SpaceX plans to launch a demonstration mission docking Dragon to the station in January 2012. If all goes well with that one, Dragon's next flight would be an operational cargo mission, SpaceX officials have said.

Dragon is also designed to be reusable, and SpaceX is modifying it to carry crew as well as supplies. The company hopes NASA eventually uses Dragon to launch its astronauts to low-Earth orbit. The country has lacked this capability since NASA's space shuttle fleet retired in July and currently depends on Russian Soyuz vehicles to provide this taxi service.

Musk did not say when he hopes the reusable rocket would be operational, or how much its development would cost. But SpaceX is going to give the enterprise its best shot.

"We have a design that on paper ? doing the calculations, doing the simulations ? it does work," Musk said. "Now we need to make sure those simulations and reality agree because generally, when they don't, reality wins."
