STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) ? When Stockton becomes the largest U.S. city ever to file for bankruptcy, it will strike a hard blow to residents, especially city employees and retirees whose health benefits and pensions helped drive the city toward insolvency.

City Manager Bob Deis said late Tuesday that officials were left with little choice but to recommend bankruptcy after failing to hammer out deals with creditors to ease the city's $26 million budget shortfall.

Deis expects the city to file for Chapter 9 protection by Friday.

Stockton will join a number of other cities and counties across the nation that have plunged into financial crisis as the recession made it tough to cover rising costs involving current and former employees, bondholders and vendors.

"What's going on in Stockton is endemic to what's going on all over the state and the country," said Michael Sweet, a San Francisco bankruptcy attorney at Fox Rothschild LLP. "Local governments are hurting and strained under the current pension and compensation systems. These systems are not appropriate for the type of economy this country has evolved into."

At a standing room-only Stockton City Council meeting Tuesday, numerous former city employees talked about their life-threatening medical conditions and said cuts to their health benefits prompted by the city's financial straits meant they would, in effect, lose their insurance.

"Some people will be devastated. There are those who have such severe medical problems that they will not be taken up by any medical company," said Gary Gillis, a retired fire chief on the board of directors of the city retiree association. "This plan appears to be a sledgehammer or a machete."

Several retirees broke down in tears after the city approved changes to their medical benefits as part of a bankruptcy budget adopted by the City Council.

"For me, bankruptcy might as well be a life sentence," said Gary Jones, a retired police officer, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor 10 years ago. Jones said his medical insurance enabled him to undergo chemotherapy and other treatments, which he said will be unaffordable at the lower level of coverage.

During the past three years, the city has dealt with $90 million in deficits in part through drastic cuts in police and fire personnel, even as residents said they have to deal with recurring break-ins and robberies, a climbing murder rate, homelessness and plummeting property values.

Once a beneficiary of the housing boom, the city now has the second-highest foreclosure rate in the nation. Its unemployment rate has doubled in the past decade and now hovers around 16 percent while a fifth of residents live below the poverty line.

"The average citizen will not put up with this," said Gregory Pitsch, a 22-year-old unemployed resident who made an unsuccessful run for mayor. "Their home prices have plummeted, they have no jobs, a lot of people are getting fed up so that they have to resort to crime."

Betty Garcia, who co-owns a downtown jewelry store with her husband, said her community is starting a neighborhood watch group to respond to a rise in crime and lack of police response, which they expect will only get worse.

"We already hear gunshots every night," Garcia said. "It's becoming like listening to the train go by. People don't even call the cops anymore."

Experts say municipalities such as Stockton must find a way to lower their contractual obligations to current and former employees as the cost of health care skyrockets and people are living longer.

"When times were good, it was easier to expand benefits and pensions and not pay as much attention to the unfunded liabilities that were growing," said David Dubrow, a bankruptcy lawyer at Arent Fox LLP in New York City. "Now that times are not good and not good for prolonged periods, those costs are becoming severe."

Some states have passed legislation related to changing pensions and retirement benefits for new employees, Dubrow said. But it's difficult to change the rules for existing employees and even more complicated for retirees, because state constitutions and other legal issues may prevent such restructuring.

In Stockton, pensions will not be affected by a bankruptcy filing, but health benefits for employees and retirees will.

There are about 2,400 retirees in the city and slightly less than half of them receive medical benefits. The unfunded liability for those benefits stands at $417 million.

As of July 1, the bankruptcy plan approved by the City Council reduces contributions to current employee and retiree health benefits and eliminates benefits for employees with less than 10 years of city service. And as of July 2013, it completely eliminates city-funded medical benefits for retirees.

Thirteen cities, counties and other government entities filed for bankruptcy protection last year ? the highest annual level in nearly two decades.

Stockton, a river port of 290,000, would be the seventh U.S. municipality to file this year and the first California city since Vallejo, which sought protection in 2008, according to James Spiotto, a Chicago bankruptcy attorney who tracks municipal bankruptcies.

Since Congress added Chapter 9 to the bankruptcy code in 1937 to allow municipalities to seek protection, some 640 government entities have filed. Last year's 13 filings more than doubled the six filed in 2010. That was the most since an equal number were filed in 1994.

Bankruptcy is a bandage for Stockton that won't solve the city's deeper problems, said Garcia, the jewelry store owner.

"With all the cuts, it's just so much, it will have a trickle effect on everybody," Garcia said. "If we make it out of this, I don't know how much skin we'll have left."

An eerie "red crucifix" seen in Britain's evening sky in ad 774 may be a previously unrecognized supernova explosion ? and could explain a mysterious spike in carbon-14 levels in that year's growth rings in Japanese cedar trees. The link is suggested today in a Nature Correspondence by a US undergraduate student with a broad interdisciplinary background and a curious mind.

A few weeks ago, Jonathon Allen, a biochemistry major at the University of California, Santa Cruz, was listening to the Nature podcast when he heard about a team of researchers in Japan who had found an odd spike in carbon-14 levels in tree rings. The spike probably came from a burst of high-energy radiation striking the upper atmosphere, increasing the rate at which carbon-14 is formed (see 'Mysterious radiation burst recorded in tree rings').

But there was a problem: the only known causes of such radiation are supernova explosions or gigantic solar flares, and the researchers knew of no such events in ad 774 or 775, the dates indicated by the tree rings.

Intrigued, Allen hit the Internet. "I just did a quick Google search," he says.

His long-standing interest in history was helpful, he notes. "I knew that going that far back, there's very limited written history," he says. "The only things I'd ever seen or heard of were religious texts and 'chronicles' that listed kings and queens, wars and things of that nature."

His search found the eighth-century entries in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle at the Avalon Project, an online library of historical and legal documents hosted by Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Scrolling down to the year ad 774, Allen found a reference to a "red crucifix" that appeared in the heavens "after sunset".

Hidden in the heavens
"It made me think it's some sort of stellar event," Allen says. Furthermore, he notes, the redness might indicate that the source was hidden behind a dust cloud dense enough to scatter all but a small amount of red light. Such a cloud might also prevent any remnants of the proposed supernova being seen by modern astronomers.

Scientists in the field are impressed. Geza Gyuk, an astronomer at Chicago's Adler Planetarium in Illinois, who has used the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle to investigate past astronomical events, says that Allen might be on to something. "The wording suggests that the object was seen in the western skies shortly after sunset," he says. "That would mean that it would have moved behind the Sun [where it could not be seen] as Earth orbited the Sun. That, along with the dimness of the 'new star' due to dust would go a long way to explaining why no one else would have seen or recorded the event."

Nevertheless, says Donald Olson, a physicist with an interest in historical astronomy at Texas State University in San Marcos, "Early chronicles can be difficult to interpret in an unambiguous way."

As far back as 1870, he says, John Jeremiah published an article in Nature that referred to the same wording from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Jeremiah proposed then that it might have been an early description of the Northern Lights.

"Another possible explanation could be an ice-crystal display," adds Olson, noting that the red "crucifix" could have been formed by sunset light illuminating high-altitude ice particles in both vertical and horizontal bands of light.

But, it could also have been a previously unrecognized supernova. Plenty of supernovae now known to astronomers "are simply missing" in the historical record, says Gyuk. "The sky is a large place and the historical record is not very good."

Louisiana-shot Cannes winner premieres in N.O.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Unlike a lot of movies shot in Louisiana, "Beasts of the Southern Wild" couldn't have been made anywhere else.

Louisiana natives and the state's bayous and marshes tell the fictional tale of a 6-year-old girl named Hushpuppy and her struggle for survival in the southern Delta with her ailing father as a storm approaches.

The film is gripping audiences around the globe for its portrayal of the spirit and resiliency of the people of south Louisiana through the fictional tale of a motherless young girl trying to hold on to her place in the world ? that place being a small, tightly-knit shantytown on the bayou just beyond the government's levee protection system. Her world is filled with wild animals, both real and imaginary.

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" was shot in southern Terrebonne Parish and Isle de Jean Charles, a real bayou community that is gradually eroding away because it has no levees to protect it. But the film's makers say it isn't a social issue movie.

"It's really about what it's like to lose the thing that made you," said director Benh Zeitlin, a native New Yorker and one of only a handful of people affiliated with "Beasts of the Southern Wild" not from Louisiana. "The film is inspired by culture and events in Louisiana but we wanted to elevate it to make it universal. It's about where you come from. Your land is your parent, and there are all these emotional connections that stem from where you come from."

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" won the grand jury prize in the U.S. dramatic competition at the Sundance Independent Film Festival as well as its cinematography award. At France's Cannes Film Festival in May, where many U.S. films were shut out, Louisiana's indie darling won the Camera d'Or for best first film.

Zeitlin said the geography of the film didn't even exist until he found the community of Pointe-aux-Chenes and just beyond it Isle de Jean Charles ? the last inhabited speck of land at the end of a winding highway south of Houma, La.

"I started driving to the end of all these south Louisiana roads, and when I drove to the end of this one, I knew I had found the place that would be the setting of this film," Zeitlin said.

Finding the right actors to play the leads took more searching. Producers went on a months-long casting quest for the child who would play Hushpuppy. It included auditions of nearly 4,000 girls in countless schools and churches across south Louisiana.

They found 5-year-old Quvenzhane (Kuh-VAHN-zuh-nay) Wallis of Houma, La., who was 6 at the time the movie was filmed in 2010. Nazie (NAY-zee), as she likes to be called, had a quality producers couldn't resist: "It's her eyes. There's something in her eyes that gives her poise, maturity, depth and wisdom beyond her years," Zeitlin said.

Now 8, Nazie walked the red carpet Monday evening at the New Orleans premiere of "Beasts" in a bright blue dress, silver slippers and a big smile as she talked to reporters and posed for pictures.

Her hair straightened and bangs pulled in a tight braid above her forehead, Nazie bore little resemblance to the pants-wearing bushy-haired wild child she portrays in "Beasts."

Also walking the carpet was New Orleans native Dwight Henry, who was hand-picked for the role of Hushpuppy's father, Wink, after producers discovered him in the Buttermilk Drop Bakery he runs in New Orleans.

"We went there every morning for grits and doughnuts, and we got to know him," Zeitlin said. "He talked about his life, things he had been through, and parts of his life got written into the film. At some point, we realized he was the one we wanted for this film."

Henry turned them down three times.

"I'm glad I did it, but at the time, I was reluctant to do it, to sacrifice my business that I had worked so hard to open for a chance at a possible movie career," said Henry.

Now Henry and Nazie say they are both looking forward to more film work. Henry has partners helping out at the bakery while he works on his film career, including a part in "Twelve Years a Slave," about a New Yorker who was captured in 1841 and enslaved in Louisiana. The film, directed by Steve McQueen, will also star actors Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender.

Zeitlin said his affinity for New Orleans grew out of events surrounding Hurricane Katrina and through a short film he had been working on at the time the hurricane struck called "Glory at Sea," which all led to the making of "Beasts of the Southern Wild."

The Fox Searchlight film opens in select theaters, starting with showings in Los Angeles and New York on Wednesday and then New Orleans-area theaters July 4.

Parents constantly tell me how hard it is to talk with their kids about money. But until I read a new survey on the topic, I had no idea how bad the problem really is. It turns out, parents would rather talk with their children about notoriously tricky subjects like drugs, smoking, and bullying than about family finances.

I get it. Money is an awkward subject to begin with. Adults usually don?t talk with their own parents or friends about it. And the topic of finances can seem complicated when compared to drugs and smoking, where the lesson for kids is a simple: ?Just say no!?

Less than half of parents do this:

A survey recently released from investment firm T. Rowe Price paints a grim picture. Although 82 percent of parents say they?re equipped to at least discuss the basics?setting goals, inflation, saving, etc.?they aren?t following through. Less than half are teaching kids how to decide when to spend and when to save, one of the most fundamental money-management lessons there is. And more than three-quarters of parents don?t always tell their kids the truth about money issues, including the family?s actual financial situation.

Researchers also talked to kids (ages 8 to 14) themselves, who we know say the darndest things! The results were pretty revealing. Despite the stereotype of dad as the family money manager, more than half of kids said they go to mom first with questions about money. And nearly half say they know their parents aren?t always on the same page about financial issues (so those closed-door conversations aren?t so secret!).

The good news.

It?s not all bad news. The survey found that 76 percent of parents do have somewhat regular conversations about money with their kids and 92 percent of kids say their parents do a good job of teaching them about money. When asked to dole out grades, kids, on average, give their parents a B+. Moms and dads aren?t acing the class, but we?re not failing, either.

A simple way to get started.

Truth is, you don?t have to be a personal finance pro like me to teach kids about money. Moms and dads do it every day, and even when they?re not entirely confident, they do a great job. I was especially delighted to see a local news clip from South Dakota, showing a mom using the Money as You Grow?site.

While her 11-year-old son navigated the site, and her five-year-old son sat on her lap, Shelly Haan read aloud an activity on the website: ?Identify items that cost money, such as ice cream, gas for the car, or clothes.? This is exactly how I (and the rest of the President?s Advisory Council on Financial Capability) hoped families would use this resource, and what a thrill to see it in practice!

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said the guidelines echo its 2003 recommendations on screening for obesity, but take into account more recent evidence that adults can lose weight and keep it off with the right help.

"The good news is that even what you might consider to be modest rather than radical weight loss has tremendous health benefits," including lowering diabetes risk and blood pressure, said Susan Curry, a member of the task force and dean of the University of Iowa College of Public Health in Iowa City.

"Losing 5 percent of your body weight has tremendous health benefits, and intensive behavioral counseling programs help you do that and sustain it," Curry told Reuters Health. "Your primary care provider can, we hope, help you to find evidence-based programs."

The need to address weight gain nationally has grown as America tallies the health and economic costs of its obesity epidemic. More than two-thirds of the country's adults can be classified as overweight or obese.

Effective weight-loss programs, Curry said, include both nutrition and exercise support. They should help people address any barriers they have to making - and maintaining - changes in their lifestyle.

Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (a ratio of weight in relation to height) of 30 or above. That's equal to a 5 foot 6 inch tall person weighing 186 pounds or a 6 foot person at 221 pounds.

In evidence considered by the task force, intensive behavioral programs with at least 12 sessions typically helped people lose between nine and 15 pounds, or about 6 percent of their original weight.

Those types of programs may also have an effect on diabetes risk, blood pressure and stomach fat, according to the new guidelines, published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. But there are still questions about any long-term impacts those interventions have on heart disease and death, for example.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved orlistat - marketed as Xenical and alli - for weight loss, but Curry and her colleagues said there wasn't enough information about how well people fare when they go off the drug to make any recommendations related to its use.

Robert Klesges, a preventive medicine researcher from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, said once people stop taking orlistat, they tend to gain back any weight they lost.

With behavioral interventions including lifestyle changes, "relapse" tends to be smaller, he told Reuters Health.

Klesges, who wasn't involved in the new study, recommended people trying to lose extra weight incorporate meal replacements into their diet and weigh themselves regularly.

"Exercise is very important, (but) it's much more important for weight-loss maintenance than weight loss," he said. Some of the benefits of exercise, he said, come from the fact that it's pretty difficult to eat a candy bar while running on a track, and people often don't have much of an appetite for snacking right after they work out.

The task force didn't review bariatric surgery as a potential intervention for obese people in the new guidelines.

According to data from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, about 220,000 people had those procedures in 2009.

'Catching Fire': Wait, Is Romeo Joining The Cast?!

Romeo Miller tells MTV News he's already met with Lionsgate about possibly appearing in one of the 'Hunger Games' flicks.

Romeo Miller (formerly known as Lil' Romeo) has racked up an impressive number of credits in the decade or so that he's been acting. As the 22-year-old makes moves in his career as an adult actor, Romeo has his eyes set on one franchise in particular.

One of Miller's ideal projects would be a trip to Panem for "The Hunger Games," he told MTV News during a recent interview for "Madea's Witness Protection." In fact, he's already met with Lionsgate to discuss the possibility.

Although he got his start as the rap star son of Master P, Miller has been acting for years now. "A lot of people don't know I've been doing this for 10 years now," he said. "I felt that all of that was practice, leading up to the time now."

But for his next roles, Miller has his sights set on an acting career similar to Will Smith. "I want to be the next big action hero or I want to do a lot of romantic type movies, romantic comedies, a little bit of everything, but definitely the next action hero," Miller said, and then added, "You can see me in 'The Hunger Games' or something like that. Just throwing that out there."

Though he admitted to not being very familiar with Suzanne Collins' books, Miller confirmed that there has been some discussion about possibly joining "Catching Fire," which is currently casting.

"I actually just met with Lionsgate about that, so you may be seeing me in one of the 'Hunger Games.' That's all I'm saying," Miller said. "Not a particular role, we just had a meeting, seeing if it was something I was interested in. I can't really talk too much, or they'll kill me. You know how 'The Hunger Games' is."

SUPREME COURT DECISIONS LOOMS, BUT ECONOMY LOOMS LARGER. Although all the sound and fury of the week will be centered on the Supreme Court's big health care and immigration decisions, both issues are still likely to take a backseat to the economy come November. Polling shows that most voters' views of "Obamacare" are already hardened, which means that no matter how the high court rules this week, the 2012 presidential election still hinges on peoples' pocketbooks.

A PEEK INTO ROMNEY'S PARK CITY WEEKEND. In case you weren't one of the lucky ones invited to Mitt Romney's retreat for high-dollar donors in Park City, Utah this weekend, ABC's Shushannah Walshe and Arlette Saenz re-live it all. THE NOTE:

The Supreme Court decision on health care reform will dominate the week, but it's not going to determine the election.

If the individual mandate is determined to be unconstitutional, President Obama will see his singular achievement undermined. If it upholds the law, the president will have a legacy.

But while Washington will obsess about picking winners and losers, the public is likely to tune out the debate all together.

First, most Americans have already formed an opinion about "Obamacare." And even a Supreme Court decision won't change those hardened views.

For example, the Kaiser Family Foundation has been tracking public opinion about the law since April 2011. What it shows is remarkable consistency of opinion. Republicans have hated it all along, while Democrats have supported it (though not as intensely have Republicans have disliked it). And, independents have been consistently un-supportive.

In April of 2011, 46 percent of independents viewed the health care law unfavorably, compared to 36 percent who viewed it favorably. Today, 49 percent view it unfavorably, while 34 percent view it favorably. http://bit.ly/zLaTpP

Second, most Americans have yet to feel the benefits of a law that has not been fully implemented.

And, finally - and most importantly - the economy is driving this election. Period.

The more that folks in Washington, DC and elsewhere spend on this debate, the more out of touch they look to the many voters who are worried, first and foremost, about keeping - or getting - a job.

This isn't to say that health care isn't important to voters. It is.

But, what they are tired of is a political culture that is more interested in scoring points than in solving problems. And, it's clear that regardless of what the Supreme Court decides, Congress isn't going to solve any of this between now and November.

The campaign has a defining week on tap - two major Supreme Court decisions, tense legislative stand-offs, the attorney general on the verge of being held in contempt of Congress. We may be in a race that stays around 47-47 all the way to November. But if outside events can nudge those numbers, this kind of week that can make it start to happen.

OBAMA IN NEW HAMPSHIRE. President Obama heads to New Hampshire for a speech at a high school in Durham, N.H. this afternoon. From an Obama campaign official: "Today in Durham, New Hampshire, the President will offer Granite State voters the choice to break the stalemate between two economic visions on how to grow to the economy - one that builds the economy from the middle class out, and the other from the top down. As a corporate buyout specialist, Mitt Romney was an outsourcing pioneer who invested in companies that helped move American jobs overseas. And while the President would end tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas, Mitt Romney's policies offer them additional incentives to outsource."

PRO-OBAMA SUPER PAC SENDS IN AIR SUPPORT. The super PAC supporting President Obama's re-election bid, Priorities USA Action, released a new television ad this weekend - the latest in their series of attacks on Mitt Romney's record at the private equity firm, Bain Capital. The latest ad titled, "My Own Coffin," features the story of Mike Earnest, a former employee at American Pad and Paper (Ampad) in Marion, Indiana. "Out of the blue one day, we were told to build a 30-foot stage. Gathered the guys, and we built that 30-foot stage, not knowing what it was for," Earnest says in the commercial. "Just days later, all three shifts were told to assemble in the warehouse. A group of people walked out on that stage, and told us that the plant is now closed, and all of you are fired. I looked both ways, I looked at the crowd, and we all just lost our jobs. We don't have an income. Mitt Romney made over a hundred million dollars by shutting down our plant, and devastated our lives. Turns out that when we built that stage, it was like building my own coffin. "THIS WEEK" REWIND. House Oversight Committee Chairman DARRELL ISSA sat down with ABC's JAKE TAPPER on Sunday to discuss the latest developments in the on-going investigation into Operation Fast and Furious.

"There cannot be executive privilege over criminal cover-up or cover-up of crime. Lying to Congress is a crime. We have every right to see documents to say, 'did you know, when did you know, what did you know,' including even the president," he said. Issa also said he believes the operation could have been part of a larger attempt by the Obama administration to push through tougher gun laws in the U.S., though he said he could not be certain. "But here's the real answer as to gun control. We have e-mail from people involved in this that are talking about using what they're finding here to support the - basically assault weapons ban or greater reporting. We don't know which came first; we probably never will. We do know that during this - this Fast and Furious operation, there were e-mails in which they're saying we can use this as part of additional reporting or things like assault weapons ban. Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan sped over to the retreat Saturday morning in a golf cart, waving to reporters, who were kept at a distance, as his golf cart entered the enclosed garage. Jeb Bush spoke, with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and when Ryan left the reception, he was seen hopping into a van with donors heading to a private dinner at an undisclosed location. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was spotted arriving at the Chateaux early Friday in an SUV that ducked into the garage. Sen. John Thune was on hand Friday and Saturday and spoke with us in the lobby Saturday morning. Thune's wife, Kimberly, said her favorite of Friday night's reception at Olympic Park was the performance by the ski jumpers, describing the athletic spectacle as "Wow." Her husband joked she was "off message" because she didn't cite Mitt Romney's speech as her favorite moment from the night. Just moments before, Kimberly Thune was saved from a potential fashion mishap when a Romney staffer came to her aid using a Tide stain stick on a spot on her red and white dress.And while we never set our eyes on former Minnesota Gov. - CONDI STEALS THE SHOW: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's lunchtime speech at the Romney donor retreat Saturday was the highlight of the weekend's festivities for many of the attendees. "Many of those same attendees said the star speaker of the weekend was former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who received and a standing ovation. Ambassador Charles Cobb, who served as ambassador to Iceland from 1989 to 1992, said Rice was 'spectacular' and described her as a 'very bright, sophisticated, articulate lady.' Husband-and-wife donors from Los Angeles who did not want to be identified said Rice's message was one of 'America needing to take charge.' 'We can't stand by and let things happen,' the wife said. 'If we do, someone else will take that leadership role.' They both described her address as an "impassioned plea" for the country to 'stand up and take charge.' Donor Kent Lucken, an international banker in Boston who moved back to his home state of Iowa for six weeks before the caucuses to help Romney, said 'she rocked it.' http://abcn.ws/MSXkdy

-PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: SUVs and town cars weren't the only mode of transportation over the weekend. Attendees hopped into golf carts that transported them between the Chateaux and the Stein Eriksen Lodge. On Friday, Mary Matalin whizzed by, and Saturday morning, Paul Ryan arrived in a golf cart and waved at reporters. Later in the day, Karl Rove, in a blue blazer, dashed out and described his own panel on "media insight" as "damn good." -SUPER PAC SPOTTINGS: A man in a dark suit and purple pocket square was camped out in the lobby of the Chateaux at Silver Lake talking to what appeared to be lanyard-wearing donors. The man was Charlie Spies, the founder of the Mitt Romney-backing super PAC Restore Our Future. He wasn't attending any of the panels or discussions and didn't even want to go into get a cup of coffee, but the lobby is really the place to be, with attendees walking to and from meetings or gathering to talk. ? It's legal for Spies to be there, but "coordination" with the candidate is not, a rule that's hard to enforce and explain. "People here understand that the private sector is not doing fine and we need a president who understands how to create jobs and turn the economy around," Spies told ABC News. The Romney campaign said the super PAC members were in Park City on their own, and were not attendees of the event. "ROF staff were not invited, nor did they attend or participate the retreat," Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said. But God?nez-Samperio, along with and tens of thousands of other young undocumented immigrants are indelibly influencing the 2012 presidential race. ROMNEY FLEXES MUSCLE AS HUGE WEEK LOOMS FOR OBAMA. Analysis from ABC's Rick Klein: This week will bring the Supreme Court's judgment on the Obama health care law. It will bring either repudiation or validation for the signature accomplishment from the president's term - enough, perhaps, to shake loose what's been a remarkably steady race. There's the big challenge of the unsteady economy, tempered at least for now by dropping gas prices. ROMNEY FACES A DRAGON IN JOBS SENT TO CHINA. A conveniently timed piece on Mitt Romney in The Washington Post has given Democrats a big chance to label him as a proponent of outsourcing jobs, a line of attack that brings together the economy, a little-known career at a private-equity firm, and China, reports ABC's Matt Negrin. The thrust of the Post's reporting is that while Romney ran Bain Capital, the firm invested in companies that moved jobs from the United States to China, India and other inexpensive countries. BIDEN, IN LEAKED MEMO, TOLD OBAMA WAR PLAN WAS FLAWED. The AP's Anne Gearan reports: "As President Barack Obama considered adding as many as 40,000 U.S. forces to a backsliding war in Afghanistan in 2009, Vice President Joe Biden warned him that the military rationale for doing so was flawed, a new book about Obama's expansion of the conflict says. POLL: LATINOS SOLIDLY BACK OBAMA. USA Today's Susan Page reports, "The president leads Romney 66%-25% among more than 1,000 Latino registered voters surveyed April 16 to May 31, matching his muscular showing in the 2008 election among Hispanics. Romney is in the weakest position among Latinos of any presidential contender since 1996 - and in those intervening 16 years their percentage of the electorate has doubled. Since the poll was taken, Obama has fortified Hispanic enthusiasm by announcing he would block the deportation of an estimated 800,000 undocumented young Latinos who were brought to the United States as children. The GOP challenger opened his show with the usual call for new leadership in Washington, took questions from a pretend moderator and used a video recording of old Hatch interviews and speeches to provide the incumbent's response. Hatch had his own play for the cameras the next afternoon. He met Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney at the Salt Lake City airport and walked with him to an awaiting car as TV stations got the shot?Liljenquist, 37, had no alternative but to undertake some unorthodox moves to get voters' attention, Hatch, 78, let his campaign treasury of nearly $10 million and other GOP leaders make his case for a seventh and final term. Maynard tops Guida in split decision in UFC bout

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ? Waiting for the decision, Gray Maynard smacked himself on each side of the face a few times to rile up the crowd.

At last, some hitting.

Clay Guida danced and dodged his way around the octagon for five rounds and it cost him a few thousand fans and points on the scorecard. Maynard beat Guida by split decision to win a lackluster lightweight bout and the main event of the UFC card.

Maynard won 48-47 on two of the scorecards Friday night. Guida won the other 48-47.

"That fight sucked," UFC President Dana White said. "I don't know how to expand on it any more."

Guida repeatedly stalled and gestured toward Maynard, even pointing at his braided hair ? doing just about everything but attack. He was even warned by the referee in the fifth round to pick up a slow pace that had the crowd booing through most of the last two rounds.

"It took me two rounds just to know, I think this guy is going to do this the whole fight," Maynard said. "I was here to work, let's work."

Maynard landed a series of rights early in the fifth to finally snap the fight out of a funk and perhaps tilt the scorecard in his favor.

Maynard bounced back from the first loss of his MMA career. He had a draw and a loss to Frankie Edgar in his last two fights and called out Edgar again after beating Guida.

Guida said his game plan was to be "unpredictable."

"He hits like a Mack Truck," Guida said. "I didn't want to be there for too much of it."

In other bouts on the main card, Cub Swanson stopped former "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Ross Pearson via TKO in the second round; Brian Ebersole defeated TJ Waldburger by unanimous decision; and Sam Stout topped Spencer Fisher by unanimous decision.

The 12-bout card kicked off a packed weekend for UFC. White was set to catch a flight to Brazil when Friday's card ended for UFC 147. Wanderlei Silva takes on Rich Franklin in the main event of the pay-per-view card Saturday night in Brazil.

New Jersey was one of the first states that truly embraced UFC, and White has credited cards at the Trump Taj Mahal for helping the Zuffa-owned version of the company grow into a heavyweight in the sports world.

The organization moved up from the state's casinos to holding UFC 32 in the Meadowlands in East Rutherford. UFC returned in May to East Rutherford for the organization's third major network card on Fox.

UFC on FX was the first sport sporting event held at Revel Resort casino's Ovation Hall and marked the world's top MMA promotion return to Atlantic City for the first time since UFC 53 in 2005.

More than 5,000 fans packed the arena and saw a solid card until a slow main event.

"I thought Guida was coming to fight," Maynard said. "The stuff got old."

Guida's Troy Polamalu-like locks were braided and ponytailed for the first time after Maynard argued the lengthy curls were a distraction. Maynard's camp filed a complaint to the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board and Guida agreed to modify the hairdo.

"Did you guys really think I would cut off my hair??? (hash)HELLNO," Guida posted on Twitter a few hours before the fight.

The New Jersey crowd that started hot for Guida and chanted his name booed the fighters after the first two dull rounds. Guida did little but dance in the ring and neither fighter attempted a takedown.

One fan shouted, "Do something!" before the start of third.

Maynard got the hint in the third and attacked, briefly pinning Guida against the cage and smacking him with a right. But the rest of the round saw Guida duck and dodge and prance around the octagon. Maynard even threw up his arms at Guida as if to say, "let's fight."

The crowd turned on Guida and started a "Maynard" chant without the thumping sounds of punches and kicks to drown them out.

White trashed the fight on Twitter and said he was "booing." He said after the fight Maynard should have won by unanimous decision.

"You can't win a fight by running around in circles," White said. "That's not how you win a fight."

Maynard finally gave a jolt to a lackluster fight in the fourth when he extended two middle fingers toward Guida and repeatedly kneed him. They started jawing at each other, and Guida finally tried a takedown. Maynard pounced and turned into a submission choke move until Guida eventually slammed his way free.

Guida ran around the ring in celebration after the bout and patted Maynard on the back.

Maynard was agitated by the posturing ? and all smiles once the decision was announced.
