Tornado Alley moving closer to Georgia

ATLANTA -- We all remember the EF3 tornado that hit Adairsville just last year, and who could forget the EF4 tornado that devastated Ringgold two years ago.

As Georgians, we know that severe weather, especially tornadoes, are a threat to our state every year. However, what many of us were taught as children, and even as adults, as to where the most tornadoes, and also the largest, occur has changed, and it may surprise you.?

The "traditional" Tornado Alley stretches from Texas all the way up to South Dakota. Dixie Alley is the not quite as bad, but still important "mini" Tornado Alley. However, in the last 40 years those maps changed ... a lot!?

A new study done by the University of Alabama at Huntsville, and published by the American Meteorological Society shows that very little of the original Tornado Alley is still a part of the NEW Tornado Alley.

The study focused specifically on F2 strength tornadoes or higher. Because those are the ones that cause the most damage along with injuries and fatalities. They also looked at how long the tornado stayed on the ground, because the longer it does, the more damage it causes. The research found that Deep South tornadoes typically have longer paths than those in the Great Plains because they actually travel at a faster rate.

The study only did the last 40 years. It started in 1973, after the Fujita scale was first implemented, but stopped in 2010. They took out 2011 for fear the super outbreak would skew the results. But that's what makes this even more interesting. Even WITHOUT the super outbreak of 2011,when the Southeast was anihilated by over 300 tornadoes, the new tornado map never changed.

So why is this important? Very little research money is coming to the southeast at this point to study tornadoes, it's all funneled into the Great Plains. As tornado alley begins to shift closer to Georgia, maybe we need to do a little more in terms of research right here at home.

Canadian coach Kieran Crowley names team for Americas Rugby Championship

TORONTO - Canadian rugby coach Kieran Crowley will be able to rely on some veteran help next month at the IRB Americas Rugby Championship in Langford, B.C.

The Oct. 11-19 tournament features sides from Canada, Argentina, the U.S. and Uruguay. Sanctioned by the IRB, its goal is to develop domestic-based players in the Americas.

Canada was runner-up at last year's ARC, defeating Uruguay 28-10 and the U.S. 23-3 before losing to unbeaten Argentina 28-9.

While Crowley has selected some young players, he has also named such veterans as Ray Barkwill, Nick Blevins, Adam Kleeberger, Jamie Mackenzie, Mike Scholz, Andrew Tiedemann, Conor Trainor, Sean White and Doug Wooldridge.

Uruguay, ranked 32st in the world, will be bringing its full national team this year, according to Crowley, with an eye to preparing for its World Cup qualification showdown next year with the 18th-ranked U.S. Eagles.

Like Canada, the U.S., will be using a domestic side at the ARC although Crowley says it looks stronger than the one the Americans fielded last year. Argentina, ranked 10th in the world, will be bringing a developmental side with its top players currently involved in the ongoing Rugby Championship tournament.

The Eagles Select XV includes capped players Shawn Pittman, Phil Tiel, Nick Wallace, Toby L'Estrange and Tito Lamositele.

The Canadian rugby schedule this fall also includes the Gold Coast Sevens in Australia Oct. 12-13 while the 15-man national team hosts the New Zealand Maori in Toronto on Nov. 3 before heading to Europe for tests in Georgia, Romania and Portugal.

The Maori game in Toronto falls outside the IRB's international window so Crowley will not be able to summon all his overseas pros. But he hopes to have most back for the November tour.

"We're still dealing with a couple (of clubs), trying to get players released," he said.

The sevens circuit continues Nov. 29-30 in Dubai and Dec. 7-8 in South Africa.

Crowley is dangling an ARC carrot for his 15-man squad.

"There's still probably a couple of positions open for the November tour which these guys get a chance to put up their hands for," he said.

Depth is needed at prop and loose forward among other positions, he added.

The Canadian ARC squad was picked after Crowley and his staff carefully watched this summer's Canadian Rugby Championship. It features eight members of the B.C. Bears and seven from the champion Ontario Blues, five from the Prairie Wolf Pack and three from The Rock.

Young talent includes Jake Illnicki and Irish-born fullback Jack Fitzpatrick, who played for Canada in the Junior World Rugby Trophy.

"The younger guys get a chance now to play at a higher level and see what it's like," said Crowley. "It's a stepping stone for them."

Not available for selection due to injury are Tom Dolezel, Jake Webster, and Sean Duke.

Ontario Blues fly-half Liam Underwood is unavailable due to university commitments.

Vietnam's VietJet agrees bumper $9 billion Airbus order

By Nguyen Phuong Linh

PARIS/HANOI (Reuters) - Low-cost airline VietJet agreed a provisional order for up to 92 Airbus jets worth $9 billion (5.6 billion pounds) at list prices on Wednesday, stepping up expansion to make its mark in a fast-growing regional market.

Vietnam's first privately-owned airline said it would buy mostly A320 planes, financed by a planned stock market listing as well as loans from foreign banks backed by export credits.

The deal is the latest blockbuster order from Asia's budget carriers for Airbus or Boeing jets, as a huge surge in the number of middle-class travellers with disposable incomes pushes up industry traffic forecasts.

Wednesday's announcement in Paris confirmed a Reuters report on Tuesday.

Of the 92 jets, 62 are set to become firm orders with purchase rights - or options with undefined delivery dates - for a further 30. The airline plans to lease eight more planes.

The carrier aims for a stock market listing in either Hong Kong or Singapore in 2015 to fund expansion beyond Vietnam, managing director Luu Duc Khanh said.

"This deal is a milestone in our company, it means we are aiming to be a multinational budget airline," Khanh said in a telephone interview.

"Vietjet Air's purpose is expanding to the regional market, not only in the domestic market, so we need to be in the overseas market in order to call in more capital."

Vietjet, which has been flying since December 2011, has a fleet of nine jets including the country's first equipped with upward-slanting, fuel-saving "Sharklet" wingtips which it received in France on Tuesday. A tenth plane is due next week.

It is the only private airline in Vietnam that offers domestic and international flights. At present, its only overseas destination is Thailand's Bangkok.

BIG AMBITIONS

The plane order was part of an economic package signed during a visit to Paris by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, but only materialised after lengthy negotiations.

"We negotiated most of the night," Khanh, a former banker, told reporters.

When formalised, the deal will include firm orders for 42 A320neo, a fuel-saving version of Airbus's best-selling jet, as well as 14 current-generation A320s and six A321 aircraft.

The first two aircraft will be delivered in the last quarter of 2014 followed by five to 10 jets each year until 2022.

Airline industry experts say VietJet wants to follow the path of low-cost giants AirAsia of Malaysia and Lion Air of Indonesia, which have signed record plane orders.

Shares in Airbus parent EADS rose as much as 1.2 percent against a weaker European market following the VietJet deal, boosted also by $6 billion of orders in China where Airbus launched a new type of A330 tailor-made for regional growth.

Vietnam's national carrier Vietnam Airlines has also expressed interest in A380 superjumbos, industry sources said.

VietJet is talking to an airline in Myanmar about a possible joint venture similar to its agreement in June with Thailand's KanAir to form Thai VietJet Air early next year, Khanh said.

He would not say which of Myanmar's seven airlines the firm was looking to partner with.

Speaking to reporters in Paris, Khanh said VietJet was also interested in setting up the first low-cost services between Vietnam and North Asia including Taiwan - which has 100,000 Vietnamese residents - South Korea and Japan.

He said the airline would pursue a strategy of alliances to support its international growth and open up new markets.

Khanh said VietJet, owned in part by Sovico Holdings, had turned a profit in the first seven months of this year.

He said the airline, which was recently fined for organising an in-flight bikini contest, would continue to foster a "fun" brand combined with low prices and customer service. But he also pledged to maintain some of the industry's lowest unit costs.

"My background is in figures and numbers. I know that 1 percent here, 0.1 percent there, make a difference," he said.

Oil prices mixed as supply concerns fade

Global oil prices have finished mixed amid easing supply concerns fuelled by speculation about a diplomatic solution to the West's conflict with Iran over its nuclear program.

The price of US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for November delivery dropped 46 cents to close at $US103.13 a barrel, the fourth day in a row of decline.

European benchmark Brent North Sea oil futures for November delivery tacked on 48 cents to $108.64 a barrel.

Oil prices have been in retreat recently in part due to the diminished chance of a US military strike on Syria and, more recently, hints of a diplomatic opening between the West and Iran.

During an address to the United Nations Tuesday, President Barack Obama pushed for pursuing diplomacy with Iran's new government, but called on Tehran to be transparent about its nuclear program.

Iran's economy has been crippled by a series of UN and US sanctions aimed at crippling its nuclear program. The West suspects the program includes nuclear weapons, an allegation Iran denies.

'If they do indeed follow through with things and get sanctions lifted, they (Iran) have a lot of oil they can put on the market,' said Kyle Cooper, managing partner at IAF Advisors in Houston, Texas.

US oil prices rallied from a low of $US102.30 earlier in the day in part out of recognition that any change in Iran's status in the international community would take significant time, Cooper said.

Saudi Arabian Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi lent further downward pressure to prices, telling reporters on the sidelines of a Riyadh meeting that his country is 'ready to compensate for any shortfall in the oil market.'

James Williams of WTRG Economics said there was no obvious reason for the divided performance of WTI and Brent on Tuesday.

However, Williams said some traders think the gap between the two prices is 'too small' given the lofty supplies in the US and the difficulties with transporting oil there compared with Europe.

High-Speed Traders Beat Laws of Physics, Steal 5 Milliseconds From Fed

A week ago, the Federal Reserve announced something or another about bonds, a move that sent the bond market into a frenzied orgy of bond loading and unloading. So what, right? The markets quiver whenever the Fed does anything. Well, weirdly, it appears the information got out five milliseconds early. Which wouldn't matter, except that those tiny fractions of seconds are a lifetime to the high-speed trading computers that run our markets.

Of the 24 Fellows honored today with the MacArthur Foundation?s 2013 ?genius? awards, about half labor on the frontlines of science and technology. One of those is Susan Murphy, a 55-year-old statistician at the University of Michigan. In this interview she talks about her passion for using math to improve health care for people with mental illness. She and the other recipients earn a $625,000 prize to be paid out over five years (an increase from the $500,000 given in past years.) See a full list of winners here, and scroll to the bottom of this post for details about the other science researchers.

[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]

What is the greatest challenge currently facing us in the health care arena?
Achieving and maintaining behavioral change. You can have a great pill?a magic blue pill that will control your blood pressure?but if you don?t take that pill every single day as many times as required, your blood pressure will not be controlled. That?s behavior change. And it?s difficult to change. If you need to take that pill for a decade, that is a different thing entirely than taking it for a day or two.

Tell me about how your methods helped clinical trials compared with those that simply compare two treatments.
The idea is to allow you to look at the entire sequence of treatments [a person experiences in care]. We see how people do in [a] first treatment, and if they do well, we randomize them to different kinds of maintenance therapies; if they don?t do well, we randomize them to different kinds of secondary treatments?augmenting their current treatment or secondary treatments. Then you get all the people who didn?t do well on the first treatment or people who did do well on the first treatment and those groups are much more representative [of a population with a certain malady].

Our SMART [for sequential, multiple assignment, randomized trial] trials are now being applied all over the health field. They are listed on my Web site. Let?s think about a trial for little kids who have autism. These are kids who at age five are still nonverbal?this is a big problem because verbal ability is strongly related to success later in life. These kids have not responded well to past treatments. Initially they were randomized to two interventions designed to improve their ability to communicate. One is focused on using spoken language in play activities?something relevant to the child. The other would be focused on the kid using something like an iPad, where the kid could press it and [it would] speak for the child. Then what happened is the little kids were tracked over time, and they saw whether or not the interventions were improving their ability to communicate, either verbally or though the iPad. The iPad device is expensive, so normally you wouldn?t give it to the child initially. The kids in the study arm that were being encouraged to express themselves verbally in play, if those kids were still struggling to communicate, then that kid was rerandomized between using the iPad-like device or even more intensive treatment?seeing the therapist more frequently. The ultimate goal was to think more about what therapies you should start with.

Right now I know you're working on ways to deliver personalized health care via mobile devices. What's your approach there?
We are working on the innards?the algorithms that would be behind an app that you would see on your phone. You can imagine an app that would be a recovery app ?coach? application?helping you deal with trying to stay off drugs, for example, or trying to deal with cravings that you feel as you are moving through life and you are trying to keep your weight down. The goal is to tailor whatever strategies the coach recommends to you; so, as time goes on [and] you change, we want the app to change with you.

Cher saves 'best effort' for first album in 12 years

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Few musicians are able to keep their careers alive for more than five decades, but pop diva Cher says her latest album is her "best effort ever."

Cher, 67, a staple of American dance music, released her 26th studio album, "Closer to the Truth" on Tuesday, her first record in 12 years.

"It's my best effort ever, so I'm happy with that. I'm singing better than ever and the songs are really good. I'm unbelievably proud of it," the singer said in an interview with Reuters at her home in California's beachside community of Malibu.

The new album, which includes the Paul Oakenfold-produced single "Woman's World," a disco-pop ode to strong women, also features songs written by pop star Pink, such as "Lie to Me" and the rousing "I Walk Alone."

"A song either is good or is bad as far as your feelings go. So I know pretty much immediately, I just know. Also, if it doesn't touch me, I can't sing it," the singer said.

The California native first gained recognition as part of musical duo Sonny & Cher, known for their 1965 hit song "I Got You Babe." With a singing voice that rang deep into the lower registers, Cher embarked on a solo career that has spanned five decades and made the singer a household name across the world.

Despite amassing a legion of fans, including more than 1.7 million Twitter followers and 500,000 Facebook likes, the singer said she is still surprised by continued interest in her work.

"It just didn't occur to me that anybody would be waiting with bated breath for my next project," Cher said.

"I've been doing it for what, 50 years almost? It just didn't occur to me to do it anymore. Nobody gets that, but I just didn't think about it," she added.

DANCE MUSIC DIVA

Dance anthems have become a musical home for the singer, who has become a long-standing name in disco with songs such as 1974's "Dark Lady" to "Believe," which earned the singer her first and only Grammy award in 2000.

Cher will once again hit the road to support her new album, and said she will be using new technology in her live performances, embarking on a North American tour spanning 49 cities, kicking off in Phoenix in March 2014.

"I like the new songs. I hope I get to do some of those. I'd like to do 'You Haven't Seen the Last of Me' and 'Welcome to Burlesque' because I just think that's so campy and fun. You know, concerts should just be fun," Cher said.

With six decades in show business under her belt, Cher is forthcoming with her opinions, from speaking out in defense of the lesbian, gay and transgender community that regards her as an icon, to weighing in on the antics of younger pop stars.

Cher said she wasn't a fan of singer and former Disney Channel actress Miley Cyrus' recent raunchy and provocative performance at MTV's Video Music Awards, where Cyrus "twerked" her way into headlines with sexually suggestive dancing.

"I didn't like it because I didn't think it was her best effort. I thought she really needed to go back and rethink it. I just didn't think it was up to the standards that I would've liked to see professionally," the singer said.

Escapism, social interaction and rewards fuel problematic gaming behaviors

COLUMBIA, Mo. New research from the University of Missouri indicates escapism, social interaction and rewards fuel problematic video-game use among "very casual" to "hardcore" adult gamers. Understanding individual motives that contribute to unhealthy game play could help counselors identify and treat individuals addicted to video games.

"The biggest risk factor for pathological video game use seems to be playing games to escape from daily life," said Joe Hilgard, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Psychological Sciences in the MU College of Arts and Science. "Individuals who play games to get away from their lives or to pretend to be other people seem to be those most at-risk for becoming part of a vicious cycle. These gamers avoid their problems by playing games, which in turn interferes with their lives because they're so busy playing games."

Problematic video game use is more than just excessive use of video games; it also includes a variety of unhealthy behaviors, such as lying to others about how much time is spent playing games and missing work or other obligations to play games.

"People who play games to socialize with other players seem to have more problems as well," Hilgard said. "It could be that games are imposing a sort of social obligation on these individuals so that they have to set aside time to play with other players. For example, in games like World of Warcraft, most players join teams or guilds. If some teammates want to play for four hours on a Saturday night, the other players feel obligated to play or else they may be cut from the team. Those play obligations can mess with individuals' real-life obligations."

Problematic video game use isn't all that different from other types of addictive behavior, such as alcohol or drug abuse, which can be spurred by poor coping strategies, Hilgard said.

"Gamers who are really into getting to the next level or collecting all of the in-game items seem to have unhealthier video-game use," Hilgard said. "When people talk about games being 'so addictive,' usually they're referring to games like Farmville or Diablo that give players rewards, such as better equipment or stronger characters, as they play. People who are especially motivated by these rewards can find it hard to stop playing."

Understanding individuals' motives for playing video games can inform researchers, game developers and consumers about why certain games attract certain individuals, Hilgard said.

"Researchers have suspected that Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) are the most addictive genre of video games," Hilgard said. "Our study provides some evidence that supports that claim. The games provide opportunities for players to advance levels, to join teams and to play with others. In addition, the games provide enormous fantasy worlds that gamers can disappear into for hours at a time and forget about their problems. MMORPGs may be triple threats for encouraging pathological game use because they present all three risk factors to gamers."

"Consistent with previous research, we did not find a perfect relationship between total time spent playing games and addictive video game behaviors," said study co-author Christopher Engelhardt, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Health Psychology in the MU School of Health Professions and the MU Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders. "Additionally, other variables, such as the proportion of free time spent playing video games, seem to better predict game addiction above and beyond the total amount of time spent playing video games."

###

The open-access journal, Frontiers in Psychology, published the article, "Individual differences in motives, preferences, and pathology in video games: the gaming attitudes, motives, and experiences scales (GAMES)," earlier in September. Bruce Bartholow, a professor of psychological sciences at MU also co-authored the study. The article is available for free viewings and downloads at http://www.frontiersin.org/Developmental_Psychology_/10.3389/fpsyg.2013.00608/abstract.

SHOW BITS: Stars eat, drink after red carpet walk

AVOIDING EMMY HUNGER PAINS

The lobby is packed inside the Nokia Theatre, where attendees such as multiple Emmy winner and "The Amazing Race" executive producer Bertram van Munster are mingling and waiting in line for beer, cocktails and snacks before the big three-hour ceremony.

The cost for a cold one: $9.25.

The celebs who ran the red carpet gauntlet are being funneled through a special side entrance draped from view from everyone else. But that isn't stopping a few lookie-loos from sneaking peeks through parts in the curtain.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please make your way into the theater. The seat fillers are getting restless," a female announcer coos a few minutes ahead of show time.

OVERHEARD IN THE EMMY FAN BLEACHERS

"What's his name? 'Dumb and Dumber!'" was the shout that went up in the fan bleachers when Jeff Daniels strolled the Emmy red carpet.

Forget that Daniels is nominated for a best actor in a drama Emmy for "Newsroom." Who can forget that classic film role?

Same for Matt LeBlanc, nominated for an Emmy for the comedy "Episodes."

"Oh my God, 'Friends' is my favorite show," someone shouted as he walked by.

"R.J.! R.J.! You're the best!" was the greeting R.J. Mitte of "Breaking Bad" received.

He waved back.

EMMY SUPER FAN FAMILY

There's no missing Salpi Bezdjian and her mother among the fans in the Emmy red carpet bleachers.

The pair were decked out in matching T-shirts embroidered with sequins that read "I (heart) Emmys."

The 28-year-old Bezdjian, from Pasadena, was taking in her sixth Emmy red carpet.

She arrived with a purse filled with piles of celebrity snapshots and a marker in hopes that some stars might stop by to sign autographs.

So who is her favorite?

"Ryan Seacrest, Michael J. Fox," she says, starting to count on her fingers, unable to pick just one.

STARTING THE SHOW WITH A BANG

Crash! Shatter!

The sounds had fans in the Emmy bleachers outside the Nokia Theatre momentarily gasping.

Turns out a tall white glass vase filled with purple flowers had tipped over on an entertainment show's red carpet set.

But no worries. Crew members rushed in to sweep up and bring new flowers.

Florida State Stays at 8 in Coaches and AP Rankings

After a ho-hum weekend for the top 25, FSU stays ranked number 8 in both polls.

Florida State, after a win over Bethune-Cookman, remains ranked 8 in both of the major polls.

Ranked opponents: Clemson stays at 3 in the AP and 4 in the Coaches. Miami moves up one in the AP to 15 and moves up two in the Coaches to 15. ?Florida moves down one to 20 in the AP and down one in the Coaches to 19. Maryland doesn't make it in after crushing West Virginia.

Fresno State replaces Arizona State in the AP. In the Coaches, Wisconsin and Texas Tech replace Arizona State and Michigan State.

The full AP?rankings are here.

The full Coaches?rankings are here.

This week was a low-risk, low reward weekend for the top 25. Spencer Hall recaps?what happened in the top 25. Only one ranked team lost. Michigan tried to make it two. And that pretty much sums it up.

Next week will be a different story. Gameday isn't going to an FCS school. Instead they are headed to Athens for LSU at Georgia. Good call. Other ranked games include Ole Miss vs Alabama, Oklahoma vs Notre Dame, and Wisconsin vs Ohio State. Florida State restarts conference play with a road trip to Boston College.

SC man who wins nearly $400M Powerball jackpot claims prize

By Harriet McLeod

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - The winner of a nearly $400 million Powerball jackpot has declined to be named, lottery officials said on Monday, but they said the winner who lives near Columbia, South Carolina, told them he bought the ticket while on a mission to buy hot dog buns.

The man stopped at a gasoline station in central South Carolina after his wife asked him to pick up the hot dog buns, but after finding they had none, he bought $20 of Powerball tickets instead, the officials said.

His big win late on Wednesday - the fourth-largest prize in the lottery's history - occurred on just the second time he had purchased tickets, the man told lottery officials.

"This is a life changing event - there are a lot of zeros in this money," Paula Harper Bethea, executive director of the South Carolina Education Lottery, had said last week while the winner remained unknown.

When he came forward on Monday afternoon, the man, who asked not be identified, told lottery officials that he was home alone when he discovered on Thursday that he won. He spun around repeatedly in his kitchen and told only his little dog about his good fortune, lottery officials said.

The man can claim his full prize of $399.4 million paid over 29 years or opt for a more immediate cash payout of $233 million, officials said.

For the state of South Carolina, the jackpot win means an additional $15 million in tax revenue, officials said. The lottery benefits education in the state, they said.

Murphy USA gasoline station in Lexington, South Carolina, where the man bought the machine-generated winning ticket on Wednesday afternoon will be rewarded $50,000 for its role, lottery officials said.

Powerball prizes have been getting larger, in part because the ticket price rose to $2 from $1 in January, and because California, the most populous U.S. state, joined in April.

Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Chances of winning the big prize are 1 in 175 million, the lottery said.

The largest Powerball jackpot was $590.5 million, won by a Florida woman in May. Ticket holders in New Jersey and Minnesota shared a $448 million jackpot in August.

The amounts paid to the winners were substantially smaller because they chose cash over an annuity.

The 17th Poetry Africa ? International Poetry Festival presented in partnership with the City of Durban and the KZN Department of Arts and Culture is proud to announce the festival line-up, which promises to be an exhilarating showcase of diverse voices and sounds. Organised by the Centre for Creative Arts (University of KwaZulu-Natal) to take place from 14-19 October, this festival is a critical platform for self-expression that offers a space for cultural exchange in the city of Durban.

The festival?s line-up features a ground-breaking poetry project ? a 12 track recorded album entitled Insurrections ? featuring poets and ethnomusicologists from India and South Africa. The project sees the rich sounds of the Indian music tradition blend with African instruments accompanying radical poetry from both continents. The Insurrections ensemble will be performed by musicians Sumangala Damodaran (India), J?rgen Brauninger (South Africa), Neo Muyanga (South Africa), Pritam Ghoshal (India), Brydon Bolton (South Africa), Bettina Schouw (South Africa), Sazi Dlamini (South Africa) and Paki Peloeole (South Africa). The poetry contingent for Insurrections will comprise of Ari Sitas (South Africa), Malika Ndlovu (South Africa), Sabita TP (India) and Vivek Narayanan (India). The ensemble will perform on Thursday, 17 October.

Keeping with the musical theme of this year?s edition, the festival will feature five poets who also work as recording musicians. Hailing from the Eastern Cape, Pura Lavisa is a writer, performer and poet whose musical arrangements incorporate percussion and African sounds. Lavisa will be presenting a collection of poems mostly in isiXhosa.

Returning to the Poetry Africa stage, well-respected Soweto-born dub-poet and writer, Lesego Rampolokeng, will deliver an infectious brand of poetry influenced by Black Consciousness and rooted in the lived experience of people on the margins. Also from Soweto, Khulile Nxumalo will present works from his first title ten flapping elbows, mama and his latest collection fhedzi, published by Die Hard Press. Obama leads mourning for Navy Yard victims

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is calling on Americans to raise their voices against the gun violence that has rattled the nation several times during his time in office, saying it "falls upon us to make it different."

Obama spoke at a memorial service Sunday for the 12 men and women killed in the Washington Navy Yard last week. The president and first lady Michelle Obama also visited with the victims' families.

Obama says it has become clear that the change needs will not come from politicians in Washington, who have been unable or unwilling to change the nation's gun laws even when tragedy strikes the capital city. Instead, Obama says, change will have to come the only way it ever has ? from people demanding action.

Iran and Syria on stage at UN: Real drama to replace shock theater

Two of the world's most explosive issues, Syria and Iran's nuclear program, could produce a dramatic diplomatic revival at the UN General Assembly when they take center stage next week.

By Howard LaFranchi,?Staff writer / September 21, 2013

President Barack Obama, Iranian President Hasan Rouhani, Syrian President Bashar Assad, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. After years of estrangement, the United States and Russia are joined as partners in a bold plan to rid Syria of chemical weapons. More surprising yet, American and Iranian leaders ? after an exchange of courteous letters ? may meet in New York for the first time since the Islamic revolution swept Iran nearly 35 years ago.

AP File Photos

Forget Broadway. The most riveting drama on a New York stage next week will be at the United Nations, as world leaders including President Obama and Iran?s new president, Hassan Rouhani, address global audiences and test the diplomatic openings for addressing two of the world?s most explosive issues: Syria and Iran?s nuclear program.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

In recent years the annual gathering of world leaders in New York for the opening of the UN General Assembly had become more of a show than a diplomatic forum ? thanks in large part to Iran?s former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, whose version of shock theater drew boldface headlines and wide disdain but facilitated few diplomatic overtures.

But next week things should be different. Mr. Rouhani, whose six-day visit to New York begins Sunday, will take his international charm offensive to the UN dais, where he is expected to argue that Iran is ready to reach a fair accord on its nuclear program that reassures the world about Iran?s intentions.

Mr. Obama, who only two weeks ago was threatening to unleash American military might against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over use of chemical weapons in Syria?s civil war, is expected to hail a barely week-old US-Russia plan to rid Syria (and the world) of its substantial chemical weapons stockpile.

And Obama, who came into office in 2009 extending a diplomatic hand to Tehran, also is likely to take note of the new tone from Iran?s leadership and to hold out hope for a diplomatic resolution to Iran?s nuclear challenge, perhaps even for a new era of cooperation between the US and Iran.

Obama will underscore in his speech that the US remains open to and prefers ?peaceful resolution? of the Iranian nuclear standoff, says Ben Rhodes, White House deputy national security adviser for strategic communications. But the president will also reiterate that it won?t be Iran?s rhetoric, but the steps it takes to prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, that the US and the international community want to see.

?We?ve always made clear we?re going to make decisions based on the actions of the Iranian government,? Mr. Rhodes says, ?not on their words.?

Also next week, though on a side stage, the UN Security Council will try to deliver a stalled resolution needed to back up the Syrian chemical weapons plan. Western powers want the resolution to have the teeth to prevent Mr. Assad from dallying or backtracking on a commitment he has made to give up all of Syria?s chemical weapons. Russia has so far balked at endowing the resolution with any recourse to the use of force, fearing the US, France, and others might take that as a green light to launch military strikes against Assad.

The Security Council won?t be the only venue for Syria action. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will meet with Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to push forward on the convening of a Syria peace conference. Mr. Ban has suggested that a successful meeting could even result in the setting of a conference date for sometime in October.

nature made vitamins and California label law

Been thinking about getting some nature made mini for men multivitamins. The California 65 warning isn't on the label and nature made is made in California. I looked at these vitamins at the local drugstore and no warning.

I know the 65 warning is bogus and just there because of California law. I'm just funny about it, just the fact it is there wigs me out a little. I'm just ocd, paranoid about things. It's just my own flaw within me.

My question is this 65 warning isn't on the bottle or box on the nature made mini gel multivitamin. Just for the simple fact the vitamin comes from California I'm a little wigged out about it. I know I'm weird lol. You guys think it will be alright to take? And is it a good vitamin?

Hong Kong braces for year's most powerful typhoon

HONG KONG (AP) ? The year's most powerful typhoon was grinding closer to Hong Kong on Sunday, forcing hundreds of flights to be canceled and shutting down shipping after pummeling island communities in the Philippines and Taiwan with heavy rains and fierce winds.

Typhoon Usagi was expected to make landfall just north of Hong Kong late Sunday or early Monday, with forecasters warning that it posed a "severe threat" to the southern Chinese city.

Usagi ? Japanese for rabbit ? was classified as a severe typhoon, packing sustained winds of 175 kilometers (109 miles) per hour, with gusts of up to 213 kph (132 mph).

The storm was downgraded from a super typhoon on Saturday ? when its sustained winds fell below 241 kilometers (150 miles) per hour ? as it passed through the Luzon Strait separating the Philippines and Taiwan, likely sparing residents in both places from the most destructive winds near its eye.

In the Philippines, Usagi left at least two people dead and two others missing, while in Taiwan nine people were hurt by falling trees on Kinmen island off China's coast.

By late Sunday afternoon, the typhoon was about 210 kilometers (130 miles) east of Hong Kong, moving west at 20 kph (12 mph), the Hong Kong Observatory said.

It was expected to skirt Hong Kong about 100 kilometers (62 miles) to the north between Sunday night and Monday morning.

The observatory said that by 7 p.m. local time it would raise the No. 8 storm warning signal, the third highest on a five-point scale, up from the current No. 3 standby signal.

The typhoon wreaked havoc on flight schedules at airports in Hong Kong, nearby Macau and mainland China, upsetting travel plans for many passengers who were returning home at the end of the three-day mid-autumn festival long weekend.

Hong Kong International Airport said 353 arriving and departing flights were canceled and another 67 delayed.

Two of Hong Kong's biggest airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragonair, said flights to and from the city's airport would be canceled from 6 p.m. Sunday and resume Monday if conditions permit.

Major Chinese airlines also canceled flights to Hong Kong, Macau and cities in neighboring Guangdong and Fujian provinces, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.

Fujian province suspended shipping between mainland China and Taiwan, Xinhua said.

The Guangdong provincial government urged people to prepare for the storm, which was forecast to slam into the manufacturing heartland of the Pearl River Delta as it skirted Hong Kong.

Guangdong authorities asked more than 44,000 fishing boats to return to port, while Fujian province evacuated thousands of people from low-lying coastal areas, Xinhua said.

In Taiwan, more than 3,300 people were evacuated from flood-prone areas and mountainous regions. The storm also caused a landslide that buried a rail line on Taiwan's southeast coast, but rail services were restored by Sunday morning.

Another landslide late Saturday at a village in the southeast sent mud and rocks crashing through the ground floor of a resort spa, forcing the evacuation of frightened guests. The Chihben River breached its levies upriver, turning the town's main street into a rock-strewn stream, flooding homes and damaging vehicles.

In the Philippines, a 50-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman drowned when a passenger boat capsized in rough waters off northeastern Aurora province, the Office of Civil Defense said Saturday. Two other people were missing in the incident, while the remaining nine passengers and crew were rescued.

Carol Alt and Nicholas Gonzalez Discuss Alternative Cancer ...

On today's A Healthy You & Carol Alt, Carol welcomed Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, the author of "What Went Wrong: The Truth Behind the Clinical Trial and Enzyme Treatment of Cancer."

And as Alt revealed, she's also a personal patient of Gonzalez's, whose cancer therapy is based on the early 20th Century work of Dr. Beard.

"What we do has a hundred-year history," said Gonzalez, explaining that Dr. Beard wrote papers on the anti-cancerous effect of?pancreatic enzymes. While working at Sloan-Kettering, Gonzalez had also met a man named Dr. Kelly, an orthodontist who used Beard's research to help with his own cancer diagnosis.

"He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and was told he had six weeks, eight weeks to live," Gonzalez recounted. Then, after Kelly began treating himself with pancreatic enzymes, Gonzalez said he eventually became well, and cancer patients soon started to seek his help.

Gonzalez also believes that these enzymes ? which already exist in our own bodies, though maybe not in the right quantities ? have the potential to kill cancer cells. Though research is still ongoing, he suspects that they attack the proteins on the malignant cells, which leads to the cells themselves dying. "They seem to kill them, digest them like a piece of meat," said Gonzalez.

Watch the video above for more on this alternative cancer therapy, as well as Alt's personal testimony.
