PICMG board supports quad-core Xeon E3 processors

Trenton Technology announced a full-size PICMG 1.3 single board computer (SBC) that's available with Intel's recently announced, quad-core Xeon E3-12xx processors. The TSB7053 offers up to 32GB of DDR3 memory, PCI and PCI Express expansion, six SATA interfaces, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, both DVI-D and VGA video, and a Mini PCI Express slot.

According to Trenton, the TSB7053 is suitable for industrial automation, medical imaging, and military/aerospace systems. The full-length board supports the PICMG (PCI Industrial Manufacturers Group) 1.3 standard as well as the SHB [PDF link] (Sundance High Speed Bus) standard, and it offers both PCI Express and PCI edge connectors, according to the company.

Generally found in telecom, industrial automation, military, and medical applications, PICMG 1.3 defines four backplane connectors, labeled A through D in the generic photo above. From right to left, they're:

  • A -- 164 pins -- PCI Express up to 16 lanes
  • B -- 98 pins -- PCI Express up to 8 lanes
  • C -- 164 pins -- SATA, USB, IPMB, SMBUS, Geographic addressing, Power management
  • D -- 98 pins (optional) -- PCI or PCI-X parallel bus
As the photo below suggests, Trenton's TSB7053 utilizes all of these. For example, it provides a single PCI Express x16 or two PCI Express x8 links, two PCI Express x4 links, and PCI, the company says.

The TSB7053 further includes a Mini PCI Express slot on its reverse side (not pictured). An optional, on-board IOB33 expansion board provides an additional PCI Express x4 link (still routed over the backplane), plus other features such as RS232 and RS422/485 serial interfaces, a PS/2 port, and a floppy interface, says Trenton.

According to Trenton, the TSB7053 has three gigabit Ethernet ports: two supplied with RJ45 ports on the board's I/O bracket, and one routed to edge connector C. Also on the bracket are two USB 2.0 ports with Type A connectors and a VGA output, while the board also includes a DVI-D video output, according to the company.

Trenton says the TSB7053 also includes six SATA/300 interfaces, plus headers for two PS/2 ports and four additional USB 2.0 ports. There are also onboard RS232 and RS422/485 headers, the company adds.

It's said the TSB7052's Intel C206 I/O controller (a "Cougar Point" variant) and LGA1155 processor socket supports either the dual-core Core i3-2120 processor, or various entries in Intel's mostly quad-core Xeon E3-12xx range. One choice, for example, is the Xeon E3-1275, with quad cores, 3.4GHz clock speed, 3.8GHz turbo frequency, and a 95-Watt TDP.

According to Trenton, the TSB7053 supports up to 32GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory via four memory sockets. Equipped with a five-year warranty, the device operates in temperatures from 32 to 122 deg. F, the company says.
