To help Wyoming residents avoid a deadly disease for themselves, pets and livestock, the Wyoming Health Department is promoting rabies prevention strategies.
Rabies can infect any mammal, including pets, livestock, small wildlife and humans. The virus affects the central nervous system, causing paralysis and ultimately death. Symptoms include behavior changes, including aggression and agitation, and also excessive salivation.
Since 2000, rabies has been confirmed in Wyoming bats, cats, cows, dogs, foxes, horses, squirrels and skunks.
State Public Health Veterinarian Karl Musgrave says animal vaccinations can protect pets, horses and livestock from rabies as well as pet owners should pets be bitten by a rabid wild animal.
Musgrave says it?s important to report animal bites to local animal control officials and to follow recommended quarantine guidelines.
