Ecommerce Podcast Features Search and Digital Market Technologies Analyst Hadley Reynolds
SLI Systems, provider of hosted search and navigation technology
Cupertino, CA (PRWEB) January 26, 2010
SLI Systems, provider of on-demand, intelligent search services for Internet and e-commerce sites, announced today that the latest Ecommerce Podcast interview features Hadley Reynolds, director of search and digital market technologies for IDC. In the podcast interview, Reynolds and Ecommerce Podcast host Shaun Ryan, CEO of SLI Systems, discuss how search is becoming an ever more important part of the online user experience.
?Search has become more and more central to how people find things and navigate online,? said Reynolds. ?It?s how they understand the online world. And the trend is for search to become a much bigger part of the interaction model.?
Not every ecommerce or content site has mastered the ability to deliver effective search, Reynolds said: ?The quality of search varies so much from site to site. Some sites can drive a whole lot more business with search, versus sites that have added search as an afterthought. Visitors expect search to be fast and accurate, and help them find what they?re looking for ? and not make them run into stuff they?re not looking for.?
As SLI Systems executives have discussed in the company?s monthly newsletter, slow-loading search pages can discourage site visitors from browsing and buying. In addition, slow load times can negatively impact your search marketing efforts: Google has incorporated page load times into its Quality Score metrics for Google AdWords campaigns, which means that if pages load slowly, ads may cost more.
The challenge of presenting relevant search results ? which site visitors expect and demand ? is one that content owners need to address more efficiently, Reynolds said. ?Site owners should be familiar with the words and terms that people use to search,? in order to reduce long and unwieldy lists of search results, he said. ?Those kinds of frustrating experiences for the consumer ought to be eliminated.?
Content owners can access analytics that allow them to gain this knowledge about keywords and searching behavior, Reynolds said. ?The site publisher has a tremendous advantage in looking at patterns of user behavior over time through logs and web analytics,? he said. ?It?s a continual process of fine-tuning the user intent, and the desired outcome. And there?s the happy accident that as a company gets deeper into search terms and user intent, it helps drive search marketing efforts.?
For instance, site search data can yield valuable information about customer preferences, according to a recent SLI Systems blog post. Shoppers may be searching for a color or size that you don?t carry; or they may be spelling a product name differently.
Another big challenge facing site owners is the popularity of mobile devices, and the constraints they place on search. ?You can?t put up long lists of results [on a mobile device],? Reynolds said. ?Now you have to be super accurate and super fast using limited real estate, and in most cases, a slower connection.?
Reynolds also divulged his first-ever online purchase: a book from Amazon.com. ?I remember thinking that buying a book online was a bizarre way to go about things, when I could just walk down the street and go to a bookstore,? Reynolds recalls. ?Then I realized that you could put together a library online in a way that?s impossible to duplicate in the real world.?
