Consider Google to be an internet moral police. It supports quality, ingenuity and authenticity of a website and frowns upon spammy, low quality, link farm type websites which are, more often than not, just some poor quality rip-offs of genuine websites and filled with myriad keywords. In an evangelist-like pursuit, to do away with the bad and retain the good, Google rolled out the Panda/Farmer update a few months ago. While the primary idea was to do away with spammy websites and push back black hat SEO tactics, a consequential impact Panda rendered, was to compel website publishers and SEO managers to take a second look at the quality of the website. By rolling out the Panda update, Google redefined its quality raters to simulate the user in a better way. It changed the SEO game altogether, and mainly for the good of the users.
Now, with strict quality raters in place, a website had to make sure it fit the bill of a well-designed, good-quality website. Having good content is no longer enough. After all, if a website is not compelling in design and structure, its usability quotient immediately tumbles and it is faces the risk of seeing its ranking being pushed back. Questions like Can a user easily make out the content they are looking for?, Is my websites ad-to-content ratio unappealing to users?, Is the site design outdated? tackle the factor of user-experience effectively. These things matter because they affect things like average time spent by a user on a website; average number of pages viewed, and even the bounce rate. If Google recognizes that users are finding a website unpleasing and low in quality, it deems it irrelevant and drastically lowers its ranking. This means that if a website wants to see a change in its PageRank it will have to review, refurnish and reinstate its architecture first so as to appeal to a majority of the users.
Google Panda was just one of the many changes yet to come; nevertheless, it always serves to have a good sense of appeal, design and content to handle just about any modification to a search engine algorithm. Keep in mind the user-experience and you are certain to sail through any update that may follow.
In a nutshell, website usability assumes a greater precedence in the order of ranking factors. Having your website analyzed in detail by a usability expert is a good way to start getting more visibility again.
