Making A Home: Biblical Hospitality vs. Entertaining

I lived for years thinking that the two were the same exact thing. Fast forward several years, several books and Bible studies on hospitality, and I came to the conclusion that there is, in fact, a big difference between the two.

I looked the two words up in thefreedictionary.com:

Entertain: To hold the attention of with something amusing or diverting.

Hospitality: Cordial and generous reception of or disposition toward guests.

Looking at these two definitions, I feel stressed and overwhelmed at the thought of entertaining. I am naturally introverted (although time and age has brought me out of my shell, and one probably wouldn't even know that I am a natural introvert.)

The thought of having to hold the attention of something for an extended period of time is totally overwhelming to me. When I think about having to do that, I feel pressured and anxious. What if I can't think of something to say? What if I'm not amusing enough? What if my guests are bored with me? Etc., etc.

However, when I read the definition of hospitality, I do know that I am indeed able to show a cordial reception of guests. I am able to show an interest in my guests and their lives. I feel the pressure slide off.

Here's the big difference between the two: entertaining is very me-centered and hospitality is guest-centered.

Here is a portrait of entertaining: What can I do that will totally knock the socks off of my guests? How beautiful can I make the table settings? What delicious gourmet dishes can I serve that will totally "wow" my guests? What outfit am I going to wear that will make me look gorgeous and put-together?

When I entertain, I obsess over what my guests will think of me. I get cranky because a pillow is out of place or there are water droplets on the bathroom vanity. If something goes wrong, it sends me over the top.

Entertaining is about impressing. Entertaining gives the glory to the hostess. The hostess' intentions are to totally impress her guests with her amazing culinary abilities. She wants to put forth the notion that she is pretty close to perfect and so is her home. I've been there way too many times. Anyone else?

However, as you may be able to see by now, this is fake and superficial. How can you be real with your guests if you can't even let your guard down for them to see your imperfections or weaknesses? If you're so worried about what your guests are thinking about you and your abilities, how can you even begin to truly focus on them and their comfort? You might think that you are, but as long as your attention is focused on yourself, there is little mental energy left to really devote to your guests.

Now, Biblical hospitality:

I'm in the midst of a pretty typical day. The kids' toys are scattered throughout the house. The kitchen counter is cluttered and there are way too many dirty dishes littering the sink and countertop. Maybe I didn't even have a shower that morning. Then the doorbell rings.

It's a neighbor or a friend. Oh no. If I invite them in, they'll know that I don't always have it together like I want everyone to think. What to do? Is the bathroom clean? Oh, I hope that one of the boys didn't miss the toilet!

Well, if I practice Biblical hospitality, I invite them in, unshowered body, cluttered house, and all. And I serve them lunch even if it means turkey sandwiches on paper plates because I haven't had the chance to run the dishwasher yet. And I don't apologize for the toys or the dirty dishes (I know that's a hard one) because that puts my guests on the spot and probably makes them feel just a bit uncomfortable. But instead, I invite them into my real, imperfect life and treat them like a friend.

That looks a lot different, doesn't it? Hospitality is not at all about "me." It's completely about others. It's about opening myself up and being real with others. It's about taking the time to love others with my time and resources (even if they're limited) even if I haven't had hours or days to clean and prep.

Biblical hospitality is not about cooking out-of-this-world dishes, setting a beautiful tablescape, or having a perfectly in-place home. You don't even have to be a good cook to practice Biblical hospitality!

Biblical hospitality is about focusing totally on our guests and their needs. It's about being okay with leaving the dishes go until later so that we can linger longer at the dinner table and talk with our guests.

When I finally realized what God expected of me as far as having other people into my home, it was really rather freeing. I didn't have to make everything perfect. I just needed to make things nice and comfortable. And I just needed to stop being so uptight, let go of my obsession of what others thought of me, and show Christ's love to my guests by opening my imperfect home and family up to them.

If we live in the "entertaining" state of mind, we'll eventually become burnt-out. Entertaining puts a lot of pressure and high expectations on us since it's all about how we can impress our guests.

Living in the "hospitality" state of mind permits us to take it easy. Sure it's fun to set a nice table and it's certainly okay to pay attention to the details and make things special. But these things are not the most important things, and they should be done to make our guests feel special and cared for.

I've been the "have guests to impress" gal. And I'm glad I don't have to go there anymore. And, trust me, you're not going to offend your guests with your relaxed approach (and if you do, then they're in the wrong, not you), but, rather, I think you'll make them comfortable knowing that you're not perfect either.

Think of it this way: If you're always going over the top when you have guests over and everything is always as close to perfect as possible, don't you think your guests are going to feel intimidated with the thought of having you to their home, feeling that it would be pretty hard to live up to your performance? I've been there.

Now, for those of us who enjoy adding special touches and details to our meals and such, that's okay too. I'm one of those gals. But our intention in doing this should be in making our guests feel important and special, not making ourselves look good. I have a wonderful friend who is a natural at adding details to her meals that always make me feel special and at-home at her home. That's great. That's okay. And I actually plan on sharing some of the things I do to add a special touch. However, it's important to remember that these are not necessary to practice hospitality and should never come before simply welcoming our guests and showing love to them.

Blessings to you all! You're truly a blessing to me, and I pray that you always feel welcome here!

Nissan CEO's $12M pay gets shareholder scrutiny (AP)

YOKOHAMA, Japan ? Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn fielded some tough questions from shareholders about his 982 million yen ($12 million) paycheck Wednesday, but won approval with no problems for another two-year stint as head of the Japanese automaker.

Ghosn, who is also head of Nissan Motor Co.'s alliance partner Renault SA of France, told an annual shareholders meeting that his pay was based on global standards. He said the average compensation for comparable auto industry chief executives is $15.3 million.

"Nissan is a Japanese company with global management," he said at a hotel in Yokohama, southwest of Tokyo.

Brazilian-born Ghosn, who has French citizenship, noted that talented multicultural management could easily find jobs elsewhere, and that rivals were looking to recruit from Nissan's ranks.

Ghosn came from Renault to steer a recovery at near-bankrupt Nissan in 1999 and oversaw painful cost cuts that have now put Japan's No. 2 automaker on a solid growth track.

It is targeting an 8 percent share of the global auto market under a six-year strategy announced last week. Nissan now has 5.8 percent global market share.

Americans may be used to hearing about the high pay of their country's executives but individual compensation began to be disclosed more regularly in Japan only last year, under a new rule requiring disclosure of pay for executives receiving 100 million yen ($1 million) or more. Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Alan Mulally is paid $26.5 million.

Ghosn earned 891 million yen last year ? already among the top salaries for a head of a Japanese company.

Most Japanese top executives are paid far lower salaries, partly because their roles tend to be different, especially in the past.

They don't wield the managerial power of a U.S. or European corporate chief, acting more like what is known as a "salaryman president" in Japan, rising up in the ranks gradually to become a symbolic cheerleader, while key decisions are still made by a larger team.

Nissan, which makes the Leaf electric vehicle, the March subcompact and Infiniti luxury model, is among the handful of Japanese companies that has a foreigner at the top.

Japanese electronics and entertainment company Sony Corp. disclosed Tuesday that Chief Executive Howard Stringer, a Welsh-born American, received 345 million yen ($4.3 million), along with stock options worth 518 million yen ($6.4 million).

Ghosn has emerged as a rare example of charismatic management in a nation that favors team work over individuals standing out.

At Wednesday's meeting, one investor, who did not give his name, asked about Ghosn's riches, noting Ghosn also owns 3 million Nissan shares.

"It should be reassuring for shareholders that I have a lot of shares," Ghosn replied, stressing that meant he has a stake in the automaker's success.

Other shareholders were impressed with Ghosn's leadership. One woman said she had no questions, but wanted to give Ghosn a book as a gift. He accepted, shaking her hand by the stage.

Yoshinobu Ota, 74, a retired trust banker, said he is invigorated by the momentum that Ghosn has found for Nissan.

"I could feel the passion from Nissan under Mr. Ghnosn. I am so grateful to him," he said after the shareholders' meeting.

"Some may argue that his pay is too much, but he has that kind of ability," he said.

As water ebbs in Minot, thoughts of recovery (AP)

MINOT, N.D. ? The Souris River began a long, slow retreat in Minot on Sunday, leaving behind an arduous rebuilding job for more than 4,000 homeowners and hundreds of business operators, most of whom lack insurance to pay for it.

Because they don't have coverage, federal assistance could amount to as little as a few thousand dollars apiece. Loan and grant programs will provide some help, as will an emergency relief fund just being set up.

Still, there was at least one ray of hope: State lawmakers might be able to lend a hand, thanks in large part to North Dakota's oil boom, which generates $1 billion a year in tax money and has helped shield the state from the worst of the recession.

Few people in Minot carried flood insurance ? only 375 homes in the flooded areas, said John Ashton, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Mike and Jodi Picard checked with neighbors when moving into their house less than two years ago and found that just one had flood insurance. The river was a quarter-mile away, and the prevailing opinion was that "we were not in a floodplain anymore" after a 1969 flood led to construction of levees and straightening of the river channel.

"Now you really kick yourself for not having it," said Jodi Picard.

The Souris topped out Sunday nearly 2 feet below projections heading into the weekend, and it appeared damage might not extend beyond the homes and businesses that took on water Friday. Officials warned against overconfidence until the river fell enough to take the pressure off levees. The National Weather Service projected the river would decline 2 feet by midweek.

The Picards stood on a bridge overlooking the swollen river, straining for a glimpse of their house in a distant cul-de-sac. It appeared water was knee-deep on the main floor.

The couple was staying with relatives in the area but said they were determined to return home. After the water recedes, they'll pump the basement dry, tear out drywall and insulation and make needed repairs.

State lawmakers will probably consider offering flood relief during a special session this fall. They have $386 million in a rainy-day fund, as well as another $136 million in a school-aid fund that could be diverted to the many communities touched by floodwaters this year. Both funds are fattened by state oil revenues.

"I think we're going to look at Bismarck, Minot, the whole statewide flooding issue, and look at them all together," said Senate Majority Leader Bob Stenehjem, a Republican from Bismarck.

When it comes to paying for rebuilding, FEMA has approved individual assistance for Burleigh (home to the capital of Bismarck) and Ward counties, where Minot is located. Gov. Jack Dalrymple is pushing to expand it to 20 other counties and the Turtle Mountain Chippewa and Spirit Lake Sioux reservations.

"We know that we have a tremendous recovery effort coming, and even as we talk about how to beat this water back over the next few days, we have already started talking about how the recovery will be managed and organized," the governor said.

The FEMA assistance is capped at a little more than $30,000, but Sen. Kent Conrad, a North Dakota Democrat, said a more realistic figure is $7,000 to $8,000 ? the typical amounts provided to victims of severe flooding in Nashville, Tenn., a year ago.

FEMA and the federal Small Business Administration will offer loan and grant programs, too. The Bank of North Dakota, the nation's only state-owned bank, already offers low-interest loans up to $500,000 to business people, farmers and ranchers living in areas that the president has declared a disaster area.

The bank and the state's Public Finance Authority also have made low-interest loans available to local governments while they wait to collect expected federal aid after they make repairs on their public works.

Eric Hardmeyer, the Bank of North Dakota's president, said the bank learned valuable lessons about administering disaster aid from the epic Red River Valley floods of 1997, which swamped the city of Grand Forks, knocked out its sewer and water systems and forced the evacuation of more than 50,000 people.

"We found that we needed to let the federal programs get in and do their business before we found out where we should play," Hardmeyer said. "Their pockets are deeper, and they're more experienced at that than we are."

Pat Owens, who was mayor of Grand Forks when the flood hit in April 1997, said federal agencies were critical to the city's recovery. They set up a one-stop shop for aid programs in Grand Forks' Civic Auditorium.

"That was a salvation," Owens told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Sunday. "People would not know how to even begin trying to bring their lives back, and that gave them a place to go."

Les Younger, a retired Air Force veteran who maintained aircraft weapons systems at Minot Air Force Base, and his wife, Jacque, a seamstress, said they did not buy flood insurance because they thought their home was far enough from the river.

Jacque Younger said the couple's recovery "is going to be very tough, because we don't have a lot of savings." But they tried to put the best face on it by thinking of how they might change things in rebuilding.

"You have to look on the bright side, because if you look on the dull side, it gets you down," Jacque Younger said.

The secret To Improving Your Love Relationships - Big Blue Baja

Improving your relationships takes work. It is not something you can quickly repair overnight. In the end, problems in your marriages generally developed over many months or years. It is unrealistic to believe that they are able to be solved immediately.

However, there are things that you can do which may have an immediate effect on strengthening your relationships. Whenever you do these things persistently over time, you will see the immediate effects translated in to long-term improvements.

When experiencing issues within their relationships, people frequently turn to therapy. Therapy may be very effective for a variety of emotional problems. Yet, with regards to improving romantic relationships, therapy may have extremely mixed results.

A lot of individuals are under the impression that when they go to a counselor, the counselor will notice that their companion is obviously the issue. The counselor will then berate their partner, and give them a medal for putting up with their partner all of those many years. Sadly, that is just not the case. Therapists will hardly ever take sides. This can be annoying to many people.

Additionally, counseling is an extremely long-term procedure. You usually meet once per week, and no end date is set. The counseling frequently begins with the counselor asking countless questions about each of your pasts, including your childhood, your interactions with your mother and father, and every other painful events that occurred throughout this time. This procedure alone could take weeks. For individuals who are in an emotionally charged state, who need urgent help with their problem relationships, this can be extremely discouraging.

It doesn?t have to be like this. You will find things that you may do that can make an immediate difference inside your relationships. One of the primary reasons that individuals have issues within their romantic relationships, is the fact that they establish habits in the way that they communicate or deal with their companion. These routines develop over time and may be extremely hard to break. I encourage you to apply the following technique beginning today and I assure you that you will begin to notice immediate benefits tomorrow. Should you regularly and faithfully apply this method, you?ll discover a significant difference in your relationship and in yourself. So let?s get started.

When you and your spouse were first together, neither of you could do wrong. You concentrated on all of the good and positive qualities of your companion, and overlooked or neglected to notice any of the not so good qualities. As a result, you paved the way for intimacy. It brought you closer and closer together.

Conversely, as your relationships advanced, you steadily started to notice flaws in your partner. You started to discover routines and behaviors in your partner which annoyed you. Just as ignoring these behaviors in the past brought you closer and closer together, as you started to call attention to those routines and behaviors you began to drift farther and farther apart.

So starting today this is what I want you to do. I would like you to let your spouse be whomever it is that they are. What I mean by this is, if they have got a bad habit, ignore it. If some thing they are doing frustrates you, ignore it. If any of their actions cause you any sort of grief, just overlook them.

Let them go where they want. Let them do what they need to do. Let them talk all they want to talk. Let them see what they want to see. Let them have what they need to have. Get the idea?

I know this will be very tough for some of you. However, if you genuinely want to fix your romantic relationships, you must do this. Do not do this begrudgingly, do not do it with a frown, don?t do it with sarcasm, don?t do it with spite, undertake it freely, willingly, and openly. Act as though everything is fantastic and just the way it is meant to be.

2011 Summer Holidays. | New Adventures In Backpacking

With the school holidays in sight, why not take holidays in Britain or just a short flight away.

Alpine activity, France

Coastal Europe hikes up its prices for July and August, but head for the mountains and you can bag yourself some great deals in the ski resorts, where summer is classed as low-season. Esprit Holidays has expanded its range of Family Alpine Summer Adventures, offering accommodation in family-friendly chalet hotels with the option of childcare and multi-activity packages. The Chalet Hotel Mariandre is an Alpine-style property in the French resort of Alpe d?Huez, a short walk from the town?s swimming pools, ice rink and Palais du Sport leisure centre. Adults and older children can choose from daily activities such as zip-wiring, rafting, mountain biking, hiking, glacier safaris and pony trekking, while younger children are looked after in the on-site nursery and Alpies Club.

Toddler tour, Turkey

Explore?s new tour of Turkey aims to make adventure holidays suitable for toddlers. Slow-paced and avoiding hot mid-summer months, it includes a boat trip to the islands, bays and remarkable ?sunken city? of Kekova off the south coast, lunch with local families, a visit to the ruins of Kayakoy, and time to build sandcastles on Patara beach.

Alpine action, Austria

Families looking for full-on thrills will love the Adventure Company?s trip to the village of Kaprun. Cycle through pine forests and dramatic gorges, and take a cable car up the mountain for an exhilarating downhill ride. There?s also whitewater rafting, summer skiing and llama trekking. Minimum age eight.

Bushcraft, Paris, France

Paris might seem an unlikely place to learn survival skills, but head to Eurocamp?s La Croix du Vieux Pont site near Compi?gne and you can do just that. Eurocamp has teamed up with the Woodcraft School to offer bushcraft activities, where families with children eight and over can learn to track animals, forage for food and create fire by friction. The site itself has a climbing wall, zip wire, abseiling and archery.

When you choose your next Holiday Lanzarote is a fantastic option. The Canary Islands are scenic, exotic and offer much variety.

Nato accused of murder by Gaddafi

Ruins of a house

Nato said that close monitoring showed this bombed residence was a command centre, but the family who lived their said it was their home

Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi has accused Nato states of murder, two days after members of the family of a close aide were killed in an air strike.

In an audio message broadcast on state TV late on Wednesday, he described those who carried out the bombardment as "criminals" and "barbarians".

Nato has said it regrets any civilian deaths, but that the targeted residence was a "command and control centre".

Italy's foreign minister earlier called for an immediate halt to hostilities.

Francisco Frattini said a ceasefire was necessary to allow humanitarian aid to be delivered to the war-torn country.

He also urged Nato to provide more details of its aerial campaign and precise guidelines on "dramatic errors involving civilians".

But Nato's Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said the alliance's air campaign was protecting civilians and would continue.

He repeated that Nato was investigating Libyan reports that seven people had been killed in an air strike last week, but stressed that it was Col Gaddafi's forces, not Nato, who were targeting civilians.

BBC Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen, who is in Tripoli, says Col Gaddafi was as defiant as ever in his latest audio message.

He said Libyans would fight "foreign barbarians" and "crusaders" to the death.

Man grieves for a girl killed in a Nato air strike in Surman, west of Tripoli (23 June 2011)Nato's secretary general said its air campaign was protecting civilians and would continue

The devil, he added, would be ashamed of the lies and allegations being made by Libya's enemies.

Col Gaddafi said he had his "back to the wall", but that the battle would "continue to the beyond, until you are wiped out".

Our correspondent says Col Gaddafi dwelt on the Nato air strike that destroyed the house of his close ally and adviser, al-Khuwailidi al-Humaidi, in Sorman on Monday.

Among the dead, who were buried a few hours before the speech, were three of Mr Humaidi's grandchildren and his daughter-in-law.

Nato said the attack was on a legitimate military target, as the house was a command centre. The Libyan government rejected the allegation.

Col Gaddafi referred to Nato's statement that its surveillance had provided conclusive proof. If the intelligence had been so good, he said, surely Nato would have known that children were living there.

"You said: 'We hit our targets with precision.' You murderers!" he said. "One day we will respond to you likewise and your homes, sons and children may become one day legitimate targets."

He called on the UN Security Council other than "the three criminals" - the US, UK and France - to send a mission to investigate the deaths of civilians in air strikes.

Nato's mission - to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya to protect civilians using "all necessary measures" short of a ground invasion - began in March in response to Col Gaddafi's violent response to an uprising.

The intervention was mandated by the UN Security Council, and led by France, Britain and the US until the end of March, when Nato took over.

Having initially been given 90 days - which would have run out on 27 June - the mission has been extended for a further 90 days.

Slam Dunk Central?s 2011 NBA Mock Draft: Picks 19-24

#20 Minnesota: Is Hofstra Guard Next Jason Terry?

Picks 1-6

Picks 7-12

Picks 13-18

19. Charlotte Bobcats, Connor Hucthon (Rufus on Fire, Charlotte Bobcats SB Nation) ? Nikola Vucevic, C, USC

The Bobcats are in need of a player who can score and rebound from the post position, and Vucevic fits those needs well.? Though not wildly athletic, he possesses a strong arsenal of post moves and should be an effective mid-range and perimeter scorer in the NBA. With his 7-foot, 260-pound frame, Vucevic also has the potential to be a competent defender at the next level. This combination of skills makes him a good choice for the Bobcats with their 19th pick.

20. Minnesota Timberwolves, GM Jonah Steinmeyer (Howlin? T-Wolf) ? Charles Jenkins, G, Hofstra

The Wolves? draft future is growing murkier as the actual date of the draft draws closer, meaning both No. 2 and No. 20 are in doubt of staying in Minnesota?s possession. As it stands, though, the Wolves already have drafted Williams and now look to address a glaring need: perimeter scorers at the two-guard.

Many might argue that Jenkins? is a PG given his small stature, but he plays as big as anyone on the court and isn?t afraid to light the lamp at will. Jenkins can come in and immediately give the Wolves a spark-scorer off the bench, just as Terry does for Dallas.

21. Portland Trail Blazers, GM Dave Deckard (Blazer?s Edge, Portland Trail Blazers SB Nation) ? Donatus Motiejunas, PF, Lithuania

Players the Blazers would have liked better are already gone, so when in doubt go with the 7-footer you can stash in Europe for another couple of years.? Portland likes perimeter-oriented bigs and often runs the pick and pop.? Motiejunas can shoot with range and has the ability to find open space.? They?ll depend on other players for rebounding and defense.

22. Denver Nuggets, GM Nate Timmons (Denver Stiffs, Denver Nuggets SB Nation) ? Markieff Morris, PF, Kansas

The Nuggets ?War Room? was all smiles and high fives spread like a Dirk Nowitzki cold as the Morris twin somehow fell to the Nuggets here. General manager Masai Ujiri finds a quick replacement for Kenyon Martin as the defensive minded, but offensively capable Morris provides the Nuggets with a very nice asset for the suddenly big, athletic, and young Denver front-court.

The Nuggets needed help at the shooting guard and small forward positions as the futures of J.R. Smith and Wilson Chandler are also in doubt, but a talent like Markieff Morris cannot be passed up and he fills another need at the power forward position.

23. Philadelphia 76ers (via Houston), GM Michael Fogliano (76ers Gab) -? Trey Thompkins, PF, Georgia

Now that we acquired Kevin Martin (trade with Houston for Iguodala), we were sure to draft big. I wanted Motiejunas (Portland at 21), as he was our second choice. Trey?s play is very similar to Channing Frye, as he has a good jump shot to go along with great size.

24. Oklahoma City Thunder, GM Royce Young (Daily Thunder, ESPN TrueHoop) -? Tyler Honeycutt, SF, UCLA

He?s not really an NBA ready impact player right now. He needs some filling out, needs to improve offensively and needs to get stronger. But there?s a lot of talent there and with a system built in Oklahoma City for development that includes patience with young players ? something not too many other organizations have ? Honeycutt could be a terrific pick at 24.

There?s a lot of people that see the Thunder going the draft-and-stash route (myself included), but OKC could sort of do that with a guy like Honeycutt. Just put him in the D-League. A lot view the D-League as a demotion and somewhere a rookie drafted in the first round should never be, but the Thunder is a franchise that really values it as a developmental tool.

Of course he would count against the 15-man roster while an international player wouldn?t, but there?s no reason the Thunder wouldn?t take a homegrown upside player. Ben Howland?s Bruins have all translated very well to the NBA and Honeycutt could very well be the next.

Excellent Hiking Techniques ? ArticleConstruct.com

Hiking in South Africa is a good method to get out there and merely take it easy while acquiring some physical exercise and making the most of mother nature all at the same time. Some sort of camping trip could go terribly wrong though should you not stick to excellent backpacking routines. Below are great tips that will help you make the hiking in South Africa journey an incredible experience that you?ll wish to repeat.

Make sure you have high quality shoes or boots for the sake of your feet and luxury. Hiking in South Africa puts a lot of stress on both the ankles and feet. This kind of stress is actually transmitted through your legs. If you are wearing footwear which aren?t excellent and do not give the feet and ankles adequate support then your back and also legs will suffer because of it. Goo quality hiking boots can also minimise the number of blisters you will get because they will tend to fit much better and not chafe in the incorrect places. Good hiking boots will also support your own ankles in order that there?s a lowered likelihood of you turning your ankle as you step on a rock. It will also absorb some of the shock caused by your feet striking the ground time and time again meaning that you will suffer much less and your ankles and the bottoms of your feet will hurt way less after a day of walking through tough terrain.

Being comfy when you are hiking in South Africa is essential. In order to help you with this you should also consider your backpack carefully. you will have to carry at least 10 kilogram?s on your back for long amounts of time. Needless to say, the weight will get less heavy along the way because you will be consuming a lot of the foodstuff you have in there, however it will still be hefty. Which means that you back pack needs to be fitted comfortably and also loaded evenly. Put the weightier items at the bottom and lighter ones at the top. If you are planning to be snacking while you hike make sure that your snacks are in the side pouches before you set off so that you will not have to go rooting through your back pack on the trail and unbalancing everything. A great backpack should have broad comfy straps along with a padded waist band so that you can support a lot of the weight on the hips rather than having every thing on your shoulders.

Then there?s your sleeping bag. Be ready for the weather you are most likely to come across. If it is likely to be cold, make sure you get a winter sleeping bag, or perhaps both a winter and summer one. If you choose to do this, place the winter bag within the summer one. This can provide you with the advantage of the winter lining and the summer sleeping bags additional insulation around the outside.

When you go hiking in South Africa be prepared. There is nothing worse than being stuck halfway through a hiking trip and finding that your boots or backpack are causing you problems or that you are too cold to get a good enough night?s sleep to deal with the next day?s walking.

Texas back in must-win mode at College World Series

"We don't like it this way," insisted UT outfielder Mark Payton. "It just looks like we do."

UT (49-18) takes on North Carolina (50-15) at 1 p.m. in the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park, with the loser headed home. The Longhorns, who have played a record 138 CWS games, dropped their opener 8-4 on Saturday night to Florida.

"You honestly have to accept what your challenge is with one day at a time," said coach Augie Garrido, who's led UT to two national titles in the past decade. "Every coach says that in every sport, and you (reporters) must get tired of hearing it. But if you're looking for some sort of magic from what you've done in the past, forget about it."

The Longhorns, however, have turned in some postseason hocus pocus in winning three elimination games against Texas State and Kent State (twice) in the NCAA tournament regional, then prevailing in two more against Arizona State in the super regional.

Green welcomes nod

"The season was on the line in my start in the regional, and the season was on the line in my start in the super regional, and now it's on the line with my start in Omaha," said today's expected starter, senior Cole Green. "I've been in this situation before, and our team has a really strong survivors' instinct that will come into play."

The Longhorns practiced for a couple of hours Sunday afternoon up the hill from TD Ameritrade at Creighton University.

"The whole idea of the practice was to get back out here, look each other in the eye, know we're alive and well and on the same team, and just embrace each other in a practice the way we're used to," Garrido said.

UT hadn't lost a CWS opener since 2000, when it dropped its first two to LSU 13-5 and Florida State 6-2. The Longhorns had won their last five CWS openers, and Sunday's setback had the typically philosophical Garrido, winner of more college baseball games than any coach in history, waxing more ideologically than usual.

"This team has a survivor's instinct," Garrido said. "The unexpected - I talk about that a lot. Now you're seeing it happen. The unexpected happened last night. We had a large dose of it, in a negative way. The fact that we've won (so many) elimination games this season, it would appear that we have all of this figured out, and this is our path to the national championship.

"It is our path, but there are no guarantees."

Meanwhile, the Tar Heels dropped their CWS opener to Vanderbilt 7-3 on Saturday. North Carolina entered the CWS on a five-game winning streak, having won three over Maine and James Madison (twice) in a regional and two over Stanford in a super regional.

"This is a four-team, double-elimination tournament, so it's like a regional," Tar Heels coach Mike Fox said of the format leading to the CWS championship series. "If you lose that first one, you're like, 'Oh, boy. We have to get on with this thing. We have to win.' I don't look at how many you have to win. You just have to win the next one."

Uphill battle

UT hasn't won a national title after dropping its CWS opener since 1950, when the Longhorns won their second of six national titles.

"It's not going to be easy to win four in a row and then win two of three in the championship series," UT shortstop Brandon Loy said. "We know it's do or die. But it's what this team is built for. With as good as our pitching is and the way we can grind offensively, we have a good chance to pull through."
