Bicycle Rodeo

HOLDEN ? The Holden Bicycle Rodeo, directed by Officer Chris Greeley of the Holden Police Department, will begin at noon Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Circle K Irving.

The rodeo is open to all youngsters interested in learning about bicycle safety. It is sponsored by the Cedar Haven Tenants Association. For information, contact Gary Jeane at 974-6763.

Applebee?s tournament

WINTERPORT ? Applebee?s Golf Tournament, to benefit Shriners Hospital for Children, will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at Streamside Golf Course.

Participation for the four-person scramble, with 18 holes and cart, is $240 a team or $60 a person. The fee includes lunch and prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive, straightest drive and coming in first or second in the men?s division, and first in the women?s division. There will be silent auction raffles, a 50-50 putting contest and money raffle, casino hole on No. 4 and lottery on No. 8. Afterward, see Midnight Rose in concert.

Putt for the Club

HERMON ? The Penobscot Nation Boys & Girls Club will hold its fifth Putt for the Club Golf Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 13, at Hermon Meadows Golf Club.

Proceeds help expand services and programs the Penobscot Nation Boys & Girls Club. Since 2000, the Penobscot Nation Boys & Girls Club has been providing a positive place for youth.

There will be prizes for best gross and net scores, $10,000 for a hole in one, 50-50 raffle, a four-wheeler, $500 gift card and a flat-screen TV.

Auction items will include an autographed Cal Ripken helmet, autographed Luis Gonzales All-Star baseball, autographed Chipper Jones baseball bat and four Red Sox tickets with parking for the Sept. 16 game against Tampa Bay.

Soccer alumnae

BANGOR ? The fifth Bangor High School girls soccer alumnae game will be held at 6 p.m. Friday Aug. 19. The game will have two 30-minute halves featuring the girls varsity squad and alumnae of the program.

Admission is free, but donations will benefit the Danielle Marie Thompson Scholarship Fund. Concessions and a silent auction will be held.

The alumnae soccer game was established in memory of Danielle Marie Thompson, a member of the Class of 2003 who died Jan. 3, 2007, as the result of a brief illness while at the University of New Hampshire. Thompson was a four-year member and captain of the Bangor girls soccer squad.

Hodgins Golf Tournament

CLIFTON ? Clifton United Baptist Church will sponsor the Harold ?Red? Hodgins Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Sawmill Golf Course on Route 9. Hodgins was an active member of the church and part of the success of last year?s tournament.

Tee times are 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Registration for a four-person team, 18 holes with a cart, is $200. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served at 5 p.m. at the church, when awards are announced. Sponsorships are available at $100 a hole.

Homemade doughnuts and coffee will be available in the morning, sandwiches for sale during the day. There will be a 50-50 raffle and prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive, putting contest and trophies for winning team.

Moonlight canoeing

HOLDEN ? Join in a moonlight canoeing trip at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Fields Pond Audubon Center.

Golfing for hockey

ORRINGTON ? The Hockey Boosters of John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor will hold their sixth golf tournament on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the 18-hole Rocky Knoll Golf Course. Shotgun start is at 1 p.m., rain or shine. Space is limited to first 40 paid teams.

There will be a $10,000 Hole-In-One contest, with other prizes for the top three teams with lowest scores. Prizes also will be awarded for closest to the pin, longest drive, hockey shot, putting and chipping contests.

Purple Team fee is $400 with four players, tee sponsorship, cart, meals, strings and Mulligans. White Team fee is $275 with four players, cart and meal. Individual golfers may sign up for $75 and be placed on a team, as space allows.

Proceeds help defray the costs for the varsity and JV hockey teams.

Memorial golf tournament

ORONO ? The first Ryan J. Thomas Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, at Penobscot Valley Country Club. Presentation of prizes and dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m.

The tournament will have a shotgun start and a scramble format. Registration is $400 for a foursome, including greens fees, golf cart, barbecue and putting green.

Ryan Thomas died on Jan. 2, 2009, after a lengthy battle with bone cancer. His strength and selflessness have inspired family and friends to start the Ryan J. Thomas Memorial Fund to help cancer patients with the hardships of treatments, raise money for cancer research and sponsor educational scholarships.

?Big Man? Camp

BANGOR ? Eastern Maine Community College will host the ?Big Man? Camp Aug. 22-26. The times are:

? Boys and girls, age 12-14, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

? Boys and girls, age 15-17, 12:30-5 p.m.

The basketball camp will be conducted by two retired professional athletes. The cost is $180. Each age group is limited to 30 campers.

Attending will be former Miami Heat player Tim James, who just returned from serving in Afghanistan.

Heroes-Hope-Healing

ORONO ? The first McDonald?s Heroes-Hope-Healing Golf Classic will take place on Monday, Aug. 15, at Penobscot Valley Country Club. Net proceeds will benefit a new Children?s Cancer & Treatment Center at Eastern Maine Medical Center?s CancerCare of Maine.

Sam Alexander of Hudson is the honorary chairman.

The event is made possible through the support of local McDonald?s owner-operator families, including the Abbotonis of Houlton, the Eckmanns of Bangor, the Ortins of Waterville and the Quagliarolis of Hampden.

The McDonald?s Heroes-Hope-Healing Golf Classic is a new name for an event with a 15-year history. Formerly known as the Bud & Barbara Leavitt Memorial Golf Classic, the tournament raised money for The Jimmy Fund.

The shotgun start time is 12:15 p.m. A cocktail reception and live-silent auction begin at 5 p.m., with a lobster and steak banquet at 6 p.m.

Auction items include a trip to Las Vegas, jewelry, a basketball autographed by the Boston Celtics and letter of authenticity, as well as a raffle for a trip to Sonoma Valley, Calif., donated by Bangor Travel.

Tournament registration packages include individual, team and corporate rates. Banquet-only tickets may be purchased for $40.
