UK Prime Minister suggests banning criminal suspects from Facebook, Twitter (Yahoo! News)

As the riots quiet down, the government considers taking preemptive efforts to keep it that way on the web

Today, in an statement to Parliament, UK Prime Minister David Cameron hinted at a crackdown on social media sites like?Twitter and?Facebook for their respective roles in spreading the?England's urban riots this week. While the looting and violence seems to be ebbing, Cameron suggested that he would look into banning anyone thought to be engaging in criminal activity from the social networks.

According to?The Guardian, Cameron made an appeal to Twitter and Facebook to remove messages and postings that were in the spirit of encouraging further chaos. British home secretary Theresa May is expected to meet with Facebook, Twitter, and RIM ? which was?hacked earlier this week after stating that it would cooperate with British authorities to mitigate the role in the riots that its BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) network played.

For now, England is easing into a state of fragile peace. Cleanup efforts are underway ??organized through Twitter, of course ? ?and?crowdsourced photo-tagging sites are looking to put names to the faces behind the week's destructive mayhem.
